Cherrystone Gallery

  • Has it really been over 50 years? We can hardly believe it! We started out as a grassroots project exhibiting a few local artists in Cora Holbrook’s empty and abandoned general store on Railroad Avenue, where her father also kept horses in the back room some years earlier. Berenice Abbott was the headliner that year. Not long after, we began showing work by Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Robert Rauschenberg. We hosted print exhibitions of work by Jasper Johns, David Hockney and Roy Lichtenstein in collaboration with Leo Castelli Gallery in NYC. Sideo Fromboluti, Nora Speyer, Joe Stefanelli and Leatrice Rose soon followed. Founders Sally Nerber and Lizzie Upham built a legacy of art world contributions here in the Artists’ Colony. When Upham passed away in the late 80s Nerber proceeded by carrying the torch solo. By 2001 Brenda Correia was invited to join the team. Together the two traveled along the familiar trajectory celebrating the talents and accomplishments from within the world of Modernism. They paved some new paths too. After a long productive life, Nerber passed away in December 2014. The flame of the torch still shines a light here on the banks of Duck Creeke across the street from Uncle Tim’s Bridge in Wellfleet on the Outer Cape.

Frying Pan Gallery

  • The Frying Pan Gallery opened in 2009 in a 100+ year-old oyster shack on Wellfleet Harbor that had been boarded up for decades.

FPG Wellfleet was saved from the wrecking ball by Cape Cod steel sculptor/architectural designer Steve Swain. Steve had just completed designing and building the neighboring restaurant Pearl - he and his wife Sarah were thrilled to have the opportunity to preserve this historically significant oyster shack while creating a vibrant gallery that features the work of local artists. Over the years, Frying Pan Gallery has grown into a beloved fixture of the Wellfleet harbor area.

Isabel Souza Studio

  • Isabel Souza is a ceramic artist and teacher based in Truro, Massachusetts. In 2019, Isabel graduated with a BFA from Syracuse University. She pursued several mediums including ceramics, textile design, silkscreen and fashion photography. During a semester abroad in Florence, Italy, Isabel cultivated new ideas around craftsmanship, art, and fashion that she would use to inform her own work. After graduating, Isabel returned to her hometown on Cape Cod to pursue her dream of establishing a ceramics business. Isabel’s goal as a ceramic artist is to create functional handmade objects that hold stories and add meaning to our surroundings. Her designs aim to feel personal in how they interact with the human body- whether it is a mug that we hold to our lips and cradle in our hands for warmth, a serving bowl that is passed between loved ones at a dinner table or a pair of vibrant earrings that we thread through our ears on special occasions. Isabel’s hope is that her works spark as much joy for their users as the creative process kindles for her.
