Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Please join us in welcoming our next artist, Joan Hopkins Coughlin and her series, "Landscapes" for an opening reception on Saturday, July 13th at 5pm. The event is free and there will be refreshments and light bites served.
Joan Hopkins Coughlin was born in Jamaica, West Indies in 1936 to a family with long ties to Wellfleet. She came to the US to study in the 1950s and received a B.A. in illustration and art education at the Rhode Island School of Design and later received a M.F.A. in painting from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Much of her early work is informed by the aesthetics of abstract gesture painting and it often takes landscape as its subject. For decades, Joan taught a landscape painting class at Castle Hill in Truro. Ever since 1959, Joan and her husband Jack Coughlin have shown their artwork in the summer in the Golden Cod Gallery on East Commercial Street. Until 2020, they spent the winter months in Montague, Mass., where they both had studios in a red wooden house by a river. This show is composed of beloved landscape paintings of both Cape Cod and Western Mass. that are owned by her family.
