deeply edifying evening of entertainment you didn’t know you needed.

CLAUDE KERVEN IS A FILMMAKER, SCREENWRITER, AND DIRECTOR WITH OVER 40 YEARS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY. HE HAS BEEN THE CHAIR OF THE FILMMAKING DEPARTMENT AT A PROMINENT NYC COLLEGE, AS WELL AS A SOUGHT AFTER TEACHER AND MENTOR AROUND THE GLOBE.
Claude discovered his passion for creating while working at his college campus Radio and TV station. His future life as a filmmaker was sealed when someone told him he could get a degree in filmmaking - a little known fact at the time. A lover of storytelling and a consumer of entertainment in all forms, from movies to TV shows to cartoons, he leapt at the chance to deepen his knowledge and pursue his passion. He received his MFA from New York University, Tisch School of the Arts and stepped into the action, armed with his debut short “Candy Store.” “Candy Store” won an Academy Award for Best Dramatic Student Film and racked up numerous first and grand jury prizes during its run through the festival circuit. He went on to direct a series of Afterschool Specials for ABC-TV, including the Emmy Award winning “Starstruck” and the Director’s Guild of America nominated “High School Narc.” Claude directed over 30 short films for Saturday Night Live, including what is said to be the most popular SNL skit of all time, “Synchronized Swimming,” a hilarious sports-themed sketch and an all-time audience favorite starring Harry Shearer and Martin Short pursuing their dreams of Olympic gold. His collaboration with Jim Belushi resulted in “Birthday Boy” which was nominated for a cable ACE Award.
Claude went on to write, direct and produce, “They Never Found Her” with Elisabeth Moss and Fargo’s Peter Stormare. He is the writer of “Mortal Thoughts” for Columbia Pictures, starring Bruce Willis, Demi Moore and Harvey Keitel, “The Shadow War,” for Universal Studios, and “Darkman and the Circus of Fear,” with Producer Sam Raimi.
As Chair of the 1-Year and 2-Year Filmmaking Programs at the New York Film Academy, a role he held since 1994, Claude developed and implemented innovative course objectives to engage and effectively teach students in the areas of directing, screenwriting, acting for film, cinematography, editing, production workshops and producing.

20 Trailblazing Women Filmmakers
Open University of Wellfleet at Preservation Hall
20 Trailblazing Women Filmmakers
Taught by instructor Claude Kerven on Thursdays 10am-12pm 10/23, 11/6, 11/13, and 11/20 , and Tuesday 10/28 This in-person class will take place at the Wellfleet Preservation Hall at 335 Main Street in Wellfleet.
Movies play a key role in spreading awareness among women, uncovering their potential, challenging the male-dominated world and making further social change. Historically, the film industry has portrayed women as wives, lovers and mothers, or as glorified objects of beauty, symbolizing sex appeal and entertainment. But due to the feminist movement, gender stereotypes are finally being challenged, and more complex female characters represented on screen. Female directors offer the audience an unbiased and realistic image of women that aligns with their actual status in society. Additionally, films directed by women are more often written by women and have more leading female characters than in films directed by male filmmakers. This lecture series will address the greater recognition women directors are beginning to receive and honor 20 remarkable women who blazed the trail.

Community Read of Pema Chödrön's "When Things Fall Apart"
Wellfleet Public Library
Community Read of When Things Fall Apart, presented by the Lily House
How can we live our lives when everything seems to fall apart-when we are continually overcome by fear, anxiety, and pain? The answer, Pema Chödrön suggests, might be just the opposite of what you expect. Here, in her most beloved and acclaimed work, Pema shows that moving toward painful situations and becoming intimate with them can open up our hearts in ways we never before imagined. Drawing from traditional Buddhist wisdom, she offers life-changing tools for transforming suffering and negative patterns into habitual ease and boundless joy.
Led by Kim Crawford, board member of the The Lily House and Senior Minister Emerita of Arlington Street Church (UU), Boston.

Great Pond Gallery at the Wellfleet Adult Community Center, 715 Old Kings Hwy., Wellfleet
Curated by Robert Rindler
ARTIST’S STATEMENT:
The compass of my art is internal, though I am very influenced by my environment. By dramatizing nature’s horizon, my paintings revel in the expansive sky and turbulent weather so familiar to the flat plains where I grew up in West Texas, and the coastal regions of Provincetown. I consider myself a colorist, and dream and thrive in the light, colors and infinite horizon of the water surrounding our peninsula. The view of the softness of the dunes is comforting, and the calm and tumultuous nature of the sky and sea are inspiring, feeding the expansiveness of my internal world that has no limits in an abstracted form. I moved to Provincetown in 1976 to launch a horse and carriage business with a friend, and discovered a thriving artist community. In addition to my art career, I have been a piano tuner on the Cape since the mid 80’s, and was the Managing Director, then Director of Berta Walker Gallery for ten years from 2005 thru 2014.
ARTIST’S BIO
Sky Power, born 1951 in Lubbock, Texas, has lived and worked in Provincetown, MA since 1976. While attending Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle, WA in 1971, Power mentored with Dale Owen, who was then Dean. During 2010 - 2013, the artist studied with painters Paul Resika, Selina Trieff, and Robert Henry, all of whom were Hans Hofmann students in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Since 2004, Power has been an exhibiting artist at Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown, MA, and for the past four decades has exhibited at various galleries and museums including George Billis Gallery in New York, NY, Infinity Gallery in Boston, the U.S. Embassy in Muscat, Oman, New Britain Museum of American Art, Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Wichita Art Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Art, Cahoon Museum, and Provincetown Art Association and Museum. The artist’s work is included in the permanent collections of the U.S. Embassy, Valletta, Malta, and Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Power’s vision returns abstraction to its earliest roots, that of a bridge between the material and spiritual worlds. Her work is color-infused and evocative, emphasizing the horizon to depict the intimate landscape with the infinite sky and vast seas.

Examining Samuel Beckett and Waiting for Godot
Open University of Wellfleet at Preservation Hall
This class taught by instructor Steven Reynolds is Wednesdays 2-4pm November 5th, 12th, 19th, and Dec 3rd
Waiting for Godot, which premiered in Paris in 1953, is being presented on Broadway this fall with Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter directed by Jamie Lloyd. How has this absurdist play survived when so many people have either booed it or walked out of it? Why has it received so many acclaimed productions performed by the very best from Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart to Bert Lahr and E.G. Marshall to Robin Williams and Steve Martin? Directors such as Herbert Blau and Mike Nichols have staged it. I directed a college theatre production years ago and it still haunts me and members of my cast.
We will spend a class on playwright Samuel Beckett, a class on Act I, a class on Act II, and a final class on various famous productions and critical reviews. We will read some of the text aloud, share our experiences with the play and what it means to us (especially at this stage of our lives) and see if we can reach any conclusions about whether it deserves its classic status. We may even begin to understand it. There is a free copy of the play available on Kindle devices. Reading Beckett’s authorized biography, Damned to Fame: The Life of Samuel Beckett by James R. Knowlson would be very helpful as well as attending any productions of a Beckett play. The Provincetown Tennessee Williams Festival is producing, Catastrophe: A Beckettian Cabaret September 25-28 and Cape Rep is producing the Irish play Trad by Mark Doherty which has Godot-like themes.

The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble is a funk/street beat improvisational brass band performing a unique blend of original and traditional music. Featuring award-winning and acclaimed Boston-area musicians, including Field/alto sax & flute, David B. Harris/trombone, Jerry Sabatini/trumpet, Blake Newman/acoustic bass, & Phil Neighbors/drums, the group has been attracting a devoted following by making beautiful noise & creative sounds for over three decades. The group has performed in the US and Europe, continuing "to push the brass band tradition forward in an entirely original way, all the while making music that's a heck of a lot of fun." - NYC Jazz Record.
RSE "mines the vein of New Orleans - with post-bop, and touches of Avant - this band cooks, edgy, raucous, fun, and first rate!" - KBCS Radio, Washington. The Boston Globe says that RSE "brilliantly bridges the booty/brain barrier!" and in a prescient characterization, Step Tempest writes that RSE is "finding joy in the rhythms of the street, in the melodies of the everyday, and in the shouts one creates against the darkness." KUT, Austin, TX calls RSE's music "something quite original in the world of jazz and beyond."
Don't miss this rare Outer Cape performance by a group whose albums have been included on best-of-year lists by no less than WNYC Music Director John Schaefer and the late Village Voice Music Writer Francis Davis.

Documentary Screening: "One to One: John & Yoko"
Wellfleet Public Library
Songmakers as Changemakers - A Documentary Series Celebrating Musicians
Curated by Kat Williams
One to One: John & Yoko
Dir. Kevin MacDonald
110 Minutes
On August 30, 1972, in New York City, John Lennon played his only full-length show after leaving The Beatles, the One to One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, a rollicking, dazzling performance from him and Yoko Ono. Oscar-winning filmmaker Kevin Macdonald's riveting documentary takes that legendary musical event and uses it as the starting point to explore eighteen defining months in the lives of John and Yoko. By 1971 the couple was newly arrived in the United States - living in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village and watching a huge amount of American television. As they experience a year of love and transformation in the US, John and Yoko begin to change their approach to protest — ultimately leading to the One to One concert, which was inspired by a Geraldo Rivera exposé they watched on TV. Filmed in a meticulously faithful reproduction of the NYC apartment the duo shared, One to One: John & Yoko offers a bold new take on a seminal time in the lives of two of history's most influential artists.

Author Talk: Corinne Demas
Wellfleet Public Library
Daughters - A Novel
From award-winning author Corinne Demas comes a moving story about the sometimes volatile but ultimately unbreakable bonds between mothers and daughters.
When Meredith flies home to New England, daughter Eloise in tow, she leaves her husband and a life back in LA. A heartbreaking loss is killing their marriage. So she looks to her mother and siblings for the support she desperately needs, and the love her daughter surely deserves-two things her husband can't provide. Meredith's mother, Delia, is thrilled by their sudden arrival at the family farm. But her husband braces for the chaos his stepdaughter granddaughter will surely bring.
Meredith's announcement that she's moved home for good takes the whole family by surprise and turns everything upside down. While wrestling with her future, artist Meredith is forced to confront her past-and the disappointment she believes her mother, a violin teacher, felt when musically gifted Meredith abandoned the violin. As Meredith works to repair relationships with members of her family, an old flame turns up and further complicates her life. Delia, in a desperate attempt to rescue her daughter's marriage, does something unforgivable, and Meredith has to decide if she should uproot Eloise and take off. When Eloise goes missing, help arrives from an unexpected quarter.
Corinne Demas is the award-winning author of thirty-eight books, including six novels, two short story collections, a memoir, a poetry chapbook, a play, and numerous books for children. She is the editor of Great American Short Stories: From Hawthorne to Hemingway. Demas is a professor emerita of English at Mount Holyoke College and a fiction editor for The Massachusetts Review. She divides her time between western Massachusetts and Cape Cod.

SIMULCAST: We the People Yo-Yo Ma plays Bach’s Cello Suites
Streamed live from Symphony Hall, Boston
Presented by Celebrity Series of Boston
Produced by Celebrity Series and THE OFFICE performing arts + film in collaboration with Opus 3 Artists and Sound Postings, the office of Yo-Yo Ma.
This November, Yo-Yo Ma will perform Bach’s complete suites for solo cello for the first time in one evening at home, in Boston. It’s music that he has offered to communities on all six continents, in moments of joy and in times of tragedy. For him it exemplifies how culture helps us to seek truth, build trust, and act in service.
This is more than a concert for Yo-Yo: it is an invitation to listen to each other and the world around us, to celebrate our community and the ways in which people all over the world—and here in Massachusetts—are bringing us together, creating shared space for connection, reflection, and action, and imagining a better future.

Documentary Screening: "Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill"
Wellfleet Public Library
Songmakers as Changemakers - A Documentary Series Celebrating Musicians
Curated by Kat Williams
Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill
Dir. Andy Brown & Brian Lindstrom - 91 Minutes
Never heard of American singer- songwriter Judee Sill? Discovered by David Geffen in the early 1970s, Sill combined the electricity (and self- destructiveness) of Janis Joplin, soulful poetry of Leonard Cohen, and a complete lack of public recognition for her innovative, brilliant work before her premature death at the age of 35. Lost Angel: The Genius of Judee Sill thrillingly revives Sill's legacy, as she is posthumously recognized by numerous contemporary artists for her original and compelling visions, and recorded in fresh interpretations by young new artists.

MET Opera at WHAT: I Puritani
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
I Puritani
For gorgeous melody, spellbinding coloratura, and virtuoso vocal fireworks, IPuritani has few equals. On January 10, the first new Met production of Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years—a striking staging by Charles Edwards, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer—arrives in cinemas worldwide. The Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, for the demanding principal roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle, Giorgio. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

MET Opera at WHAT: Tristan und Isolde
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Tristan und Isolde
Conductor Joana Mallwitz makes her Met debut leading an extraordinary cast in Mozart’s comic masterpiece. Bass-baritone Michael Sumuel stars as the clever valet Figaro, opposite soprano Olga Kulchynska as his betrothed, the wily maid Susanna. Baritone Joshua Hopkins is the skirt-chasing Count, with soprano Federica Lombardi as his anguished wife and mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce as the adolescent page Cherubino. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

MET Opera at WHAT: Eugene Onegin
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Eugene Onegin
Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin, which will be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera stage to cinemas worldwide on May 2. Baritone Igor Golovatenko is the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph). This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

MET Opera at WHAT: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Open University of Wellfleet at Preservation Hall
This class is with instructor Marc Strauss Mondays 6-8pm 10/20, 10/27, 11/3, 11/10, 11/17 on Zoom
Edgar Yipsel “Yip” Harburg (1896 – 1981) was an American popular song lyricist and librettist who worked with many well-known composers. He wrote the lyrics to the standards "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" "April in Paris," and "It's Only a Paper Moon," as well as all of the songs (with composer Harold Arlen) for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, including "Over the Rainbow." Known for the social commentary of his lyrics as well as his progressive leanings, he championed racial, sexual and gender equality throughout his life, ideas that continue to resonate in the 21st century. On Zoom only, Marc Strauss, Ph.D., will provide historical context and lead discussion on the life and works of Yip Harburg by showing performances via song and dance videos on YouTube throughout his seven-decade career.

MET Opera at WHAT: La Sonnambula
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
La Sonnambula
Following triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina’s fiancé, Elvino, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival, Lisa, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo. Riccardo Frizza takes the podium for one of opera’s most ravishing works, which will be transmitted live from the Met stage to cinemas on October 18. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

In June of 2023, when Pelagic Research Services arrived in the remote stretch of ocean where the Titan submersible had gone missing, they quickly learned that they would have to do what other deep-sea experts had already tried unsuccessfully: to find the lost sub in some of the most forbidding depths of the North Atlantic. Using their deep-water remotely operated vehicle, they reached the ocean floor in time for a rescue - but learned that the crew and passengers aboard the Titan had already been lost.
Join Pelagic CEO Edward Cassano as he presents on his company's role in the story of the Titan submersible disaster, along with Pelagic's overall dedication to oceanography, conservation projects, seafloor geology, and underwater exploration.

Author Talk: Dan Martino
Wellfleet Public Library
The Oyster Book
The oyster is one of Earth's oldest animals, and fossil records show humans have enjoyed them for hundreds of thousands of years. But like so many other creatures, wild oysters were driven to near extinction by overconsumption and pollution. The Clean Water Act passed in 1972 marked a turning point for water quality, and decades later, we're witnessing a renaissance in oyster culture as the rise of aquaculture (ocean farming) attempts to supply a growing demand for oysters. Internationally renowned oyster farmer Dan Martino guides readers through this fascinating history before presenting a detailed breakdown of the current state of the oyster industry as only an insider can. He discusses husbandry, nursery, and farm techniques; the practical side of working with local government to set up a farm; tips for selling into the market; and what qualities make for the perfect oyster. The Oyster Book is an exploration of the past, present, and future of humanity's relationship with the oyster, highlighting how humans can learn from our mistakes and harness the oyster's potential for a more sustainable future.
Dan Martino was a TV producer for a decade when he stumbled upon oyster farming while filming a show. The opportunities within the oyster farming industry were so apparent that Dan promptly changed careers and started his own tarm, Cottage City Oysters, oft the coast of Martha's Vineyard with his brother Greg. With over a decade of farming under his belt, Dan and the Cottage City Oyster Farm have become international leaders within the 3D regenerative farming industry.

Oyster Wreath Making Workshop
Wellfleet Adult Community Center
Join us for a creative Oysterfest-inspired Wreath Making Workshop.
Led by Carol Stoinackle
We provide the wreath frame and a selection of beautiful oyster shells, while you bring your own unique treasures—think sea glass, driftwood, or shells from the shores of Wellfleet, or natural finds like pinecones, feathers, or dried flowers from your garden or woodland walks. In this hands-on class, you’ll craft a one-of-a-kind wreath that celebrates the beauty of nature and your personal love of Wellfleet’s coastal or earthy aesthetic. Perfect for all skill levels, this workshop offers a relaxing, creative escape to celebrate Oysterfest. All materials except personal treasures are included. This event is limited to 8 people, so please sign up as soon as possible to reserve your space. First preference will be given to Wellfleet residents and taxpayers due to the limited spaces. Please consider bringing your own snack and refreshments.
Material Cost $5, Limited to 8 people.
