Exploring Coastal Cape Cod: Nauset Beach and Pochet Island
Mass Audubon
The ever-changing coastline of Cape Cod is vibrant, diverse, and dynamic. Barrier beaches, salt marshes, tidal flats, coastal heathlands, and maritime forests are just some of the incredible systems we will explore in this series of hikes that celebrate these unique and essential habitats dotting our coastline.
Nauset beach is a 10-mile-long barrier beach stretching out along the Atlantic Ocean. During our hike we'll search for piping plovers and other nesting shorebirds as we make our way to the gem of Pleasant Bay, Pochet Island. This hike is 5mi in length and much of the hike includes walking on soft sand.
During the program, we make stops to enjoy birds, other wildlife, and the area's unique cultural history. We will also take water breaks and stop for lunch.

MET Opera At WHAT - Salome
Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at WHAT
Salome
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Languages of Nature Languages of Art Workshop
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Languages of Nature Languages of Art
A Movement and Nature Workshop
LNLA is a movement-sound based workshop that explores the origin of primary language. We discover that this is the kinship language that humans have in common with the natural world. This is an evolutionary and developmental exploration beginning with guided mediation in-utero. We extend this to discover how primary language is core to art-making. We play with movement games, visual art-making, and poetry as forerunners for making mini dances. With these’experiences, we immerse ourselves through primary languaging with the natural world. Based on our encounters we create a ceremonial dance piece honoring our kinship with nature. We work with improvisational musicians. No previous study in the various arts required.

The Goat is in the Freezer: Poems & Essays by Miranda Jonté
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
With her signature spark and fearless wit, actor & playwright Miranda Jonté dives into
the solo show world once again premiering her brand- new work, The Goat Is In The
Freezer: An Evening of Monologues, Essays, & Poems. After twenty years in NYC, Miranda hits the road in her trusty van, Mathilda, spending two years crisscrossing the far reaches of the U.S., caring for people’s houses and their pets while navigating the pandemic. From a log cabin in the Pacific Northwest, to a Cracker Barrell parking lot in upstate New York, to a sweltering pet sit on a Texas farm, these notes from the road take us on an adventure of wander lust, friendship, theatre & film work, and dog rescue – all fueled by enormous humor and copious amounts of coffee.
Miranda’s first solo venture, the celebrated Good & Kissed, premiered at the Midtown International Theatre Festival in 2017. She recently concluded seven years of touring the show with a farewell performance at Tate Farms in Rockwall, TX.
The Goat Is In The Freezer is Miranda’s first appearance at Wellfleet Preservation Hall.

Rise Above - Documentary Film Screening
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Rise Above follows Cape Cod music icon Sarah Swain’s deeply moving journey of losing her mother to cancer and how that experience motivated her to make a difference in her community for others diagnosed with cancer.
As a local musician, Sarah Swain first created the Cape Cod Women’s Music Festival in 2012 to raise money for cancer patients. Wanting to do more to help her community, in 2014, Sarah founded the non-profit Cape Wellness Collaborative, under the guidance of attorney Bruce Bierhans. CWC works with a team of outstanding local wellness professionals to provide free-of-charge integrative wellness therapies to those facing cancer on Cape Cod. Sarah’s goal continues to be helping each patient with cancer feel better through integrative therapies that “aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms of disease.”
Sarah's work has made a broad reach within the Cape Cod community and beyond. In 2019, Sarah and Cape Wellness Collaborative were awarded the Massachusetts Nonprofit Council’s Innovation Award. In 2020 Sarah received the Massachusetts Red Cross Community Hero Award, and, in 2021 she received the National Women’s Council of Churches Humanitarian Award.

Field School: Hiking Backwoods and Beaches
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
June 14 & 15
During this active weekend we will take the road less traveled, cover new ground, and experience the Cape at a beautiful time of year. Our extended hikes will explore the backwoods, remote beaches, dramatic dunes, quiet kettle ponds, and sheltering woodlands of the Outer Cape and take us to "hidden" parts of the Cape Cod National Seashore and local conservation areas that the average visitor and local rarely explore.
The Outer Cape will be the focus of our hikes. We can expect to experience quiet pine woods, dramatic bluffs, hills and valleys, peeks of the Atlantic Ocean, subdued saltmarshes, and time on the Outer Beach.
Each walk will avarage 5 miles in length and on varied terrain - from established wooded trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes.
While the routes of our walks do not allow for shortcuts, and the goal is to walk at a steady pace, we will also stop to enjoy the birds, wildlife, and local history. We will also take water breaks and stop for lunch. A shorter sunset walk at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also schedules - a perfect way to the end the first day!
Please pack a brown bag lunch, drinking waster, and snacks for each day hike.
Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. You might consider bringing binoculars, and a notepad or journal- you never know when inspiration strikes! A backpack in which to carry your gear is also needed.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. Documentary Screening: Maya and the Wave
Wellfleet Public Library
Maya Gabeira grows up in Rio de Janeiro, begins competing in surfing at age 15, and turns pro at 17. However, her abilities are doubted by many of her big wave surfing male peers. In 2013, Gabeira suffers a devastating wipeout at Nazaré, Portugal. She nearly drowns and endures a prolonged recovery that requires back surgeries and physical therapy. Gabeira eventually returns to Nazaré and breaks the record for the largest wave ever surfed by a woman. Maya and the Wave is a portrait of Gabeira and her struggles to be taken seriously as a woman in a male-dominated sport, focusing in part on the role that sexism played in the response to her injuries while trying to surf giant waves.

Marine Mammal Strandings on Cape Cod
With Michaela Wellman
IFAW's Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR Team is the responding agency for live and dead stranded marine mammals, including dolphins, porpoises, whales, and seals, on Cape Cod down to the Southeastern border of Massachusetts, covering ~750 miles of coastline. Cape Cod has the highest frequency of small cetacean mass strandings in the world, driven primarily by the gently sloping sand flats, large tidal fluctuations, close proximity to fertile feeding grounds, social nature of the species that strand, and the hook-like shape of the Cape itself. Wellfleet specifically is a hotspot within a hotspot for these strandings. IFAW's veterinarians and biologists perform an in-field health assessment on every live stranded cetacean and those that are deemed sufficiently healthy are immediately release back to the ocean. Join IFAW Stranding Technician Michaela Wellman and learn more about the critical work that IFAW's MMR team does right here in your own backyard!

FEMALE HUSBANDS
Long before people identified as transgender or lesbian, there were female husbands and the women who loved them. Female husbands - people assigned female who transed gender, lived as men, and married women - were true queer pioneers. Moving deftly from the colonial era to just before the First World War, Jen Manion uncovers the riveting and very personal stories of ordinary people who lived as men despite tremendous risk, danger, violence, and threat of punishment. Female Husbands weaves the story of their lives in relation to broader social, economic, and political developments in the United States and the United Kingdom while also exploring how attitudes towards female husbands shifted in relation to transformations in gender politics and women’s rights, ultimately leading to the demise of he category of female husband' in the early twentieth century.
Female Husbands offers a dynamic, varied, and complex history of the LGBTQ past.
Jen Manion is a social and cultural historian whose work examines the role of gender and sexuality in American life. Manion is the author of Liberty's Prisoners: Carceral Culture in Early America (Penn, 2015) and Female Husbands: A Trans History. (Cambridge,2020) and co-editor of Taking Back the Academy (Routledge, 2004) with Jim Downs. Jen has written dozens of essays and articles for popular and scholarly publications. Jen received a PhD in history from Rutgers University and a BA in history with an English minor from the University of Pennsylvania, magna cum laude. Jen is Professor of History and Sexuality, Women's and Gender Studies at Amherst College.

Slavery and Abolitionism on Cape Cod
From the start of the Puritan era through the end of he Revolutionary War, Boston was the central hub o the slave trade. Slaves were brought onboard ships fron the African coast with regularity, often mastered by Cape Cod sea captains. The total number of slaves per household was certainly much smaller in the Northeast than they were in the larger plantations found in the South, but, nonetheless, a much-needed labor force was deemed a necessity. After Massachusetts legally prohibited the practice of slavery in 1780, sea captains continued to engage in its development in a variety of ways. Some captains would bring slaves in surreptitiously, while other masters of the sea profited in indirect ways. Some mariners provided inexpensive low-grade food to the plantations, while others would bring cotton to the North for textile work. In the early 1800s the Commonwealth's shipping industry became divided, with some men fighting for the cause of abolitionism while other captains preterred a very slow demise to this human trafficking. Massachusetts would eventually lead a movement to fight for total abolitionism. To understand the thinking of the day, religious views, political positions, economic factors, and social movements are all placed into sharper detail and given greater context. By sharing protiles of notable Black people living in Massachusetts, we acknowledge the enormous positive contributions made by those forced to relinquish their personal right to freedom.
Michael V. Pregot is an educator, writer, and admirer of local history. As a Cape Cod resident, he loves researching the stories of historic maritime figures to share familiar and yet untold vignettes of their deeds with others. His goal is to keep an audience drawn to and focused on vivid stories of the sea.

The Battle for Boston
The Battle for Boston captures the remarkable era under Mayor Ray Flynn, whose election in 1983 marked the beginning of a profound shift in the city's political and social landscape. Don Gillis, a Flynn senior advisor, chronicles the inspiring journey of a city that dared to challenge the entrenched power brokers-including developers, landlords, and banking industry leaders-through powerful grassroots campaigns. The Battle for Boston poses a critical inquiry: Can cities truly embrace progressivism and govern effectively in the twenty-first century? This qualitative narrative study is a testament to the possibility of such governance, driven by the indomitable spirit of those who strive for a fair and equitable society.

In this new dark comedy, the sensationalized trial is served up over three meals featuring a unique Italian recipe seasoned with equal portions of wit, anarchy, slapstick comedy, immigration and capital(ist) punishment.

Field School: Introduction to Shorebirds
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
August 2 and 3
There is no better place to explore and study the topic of shorebird ecology than the beautiful coastal communities of Cape Cod at the height of shorebird migration. This course is designed to give the novice birder, or those inexperienced with coastal birds, the skills to identify the 'peeps,' plovers, and other shorebird species.
During the course, we will touch upon topics such as identification, biology, behavior, and migration. Our discussions will also cover the issues and threats these birds face in coastal environments. Field excursions to barrier beaches, salt marshes, tidal rivers, and other unique ecosystems of the Outer Cape will provide opportunities to become acquainted with the diverse array of shorebirds for which the region is famous. Gulls, terns and herons will also be conspicuous inhabitants of these areas and will not be ignored!
Field walks may average 4-5 miles in length and on varied terrain-from established trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes. While there is considerable walking, most is done at a leisurely pace as we look for birds. Please pack a brown bag lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Sunscreen is also a good idea! Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. Binoculars are highly recommended - you may consider bringing a spotting scope as well.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. A detailed schedule will be prepared and sent to registrants at approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.
This course is one of several Cape Cod Field Schools offered. To learn more, visit www.massaudubon.org/capecodfieldschools.

Cape Cod Chamber Music - Phenomenon: Two Manasses, One Nakamatsu & More
Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival at First Congregational Church of Wellfleet
Kobi Malkin, violin Pawel Knapik, bass
Grace Park, violin Jon Manasse, clarinet
Danielle Farina, viola Alec Manasse, clarinet
Brook Speltz, cello Jon Nakamatsu, piano
Talented artists join Manasse and Nakamatsu – including Jon’s son Alec Manasse. Clarinetists Jon and Alec will join the string players to perform Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor – even though the modern clarinet had not been invented in Bach’s time! The other piece is a worldwide chamber music favorite, Schubert’s Quintet in A Major, known as the “Trout,” for Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, and Piano.
The New York Times praised award-winning Israeli violinist Kobi Malkin for his “aptly traversed palette of emotions, from languid introspection to fevered intensity with gorgeous tone and an edge-of-seat intensity.” Grace Park is an internationally acclaimed violinist who recently gave her debut recital at Carnegie Hall; the San Francisco Chronicle called her “fresh, different, and exhilarating.”
Brook Speltz is the award-winning cellist of the internationally renowned Escher String Quartet and an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center who also performs on extensive tours with the cello rock band Break of Reality. Since completing his master’s degree at The Juilliard School, clarinetist Alec Manasse has enjoyed a lively and varied professional life. Alec plays regularly with many of New York City’s top ensembles, including the Metropolitan Opera, the American Ballet Theater Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. He also frequently played in the Orchestra of Sweeney Todd on Broadway.

Field School: Hatching Diamondback Terrapins
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
August 23 and 24
This course is designed to offer unique opportunities to learn more about the turtles of Cape Cod with an emphasis on the threatened diamondback terrapin. In early summer, female diamondback terrapins leave the salt marsh to lay eggs in adjacent uplands. Several months later tiny turtles emerge from their eggshells, tunnel to the surface, and head to the marsh.
For over 30 years we have been studying the populations of terrapins in Wellfleet Bay. Through nesting surveys, mark and recapture studies, radio telemetry, and habitat and prey analysis, we have built a solid foundation of data to begin understanding the life histories of these animals and the human impacts affecting them.
During this two-day field school you will gain first-hand knowledge of turtle biology; monitor nests for hatching activity; weigh, measure, and release hatchlings; and document nesting success at various Outer Cape locations.
Indoor presentations will complement our field studies. A lecture on the first evening will provide a good overview of diamondback terrapins and their natural history. On the second afternoon there will be a lecture focusing on research conducted to study hatchling movements using radio tags, and an update on nesting statistics in our region.

Vulnerable populations, such as the neurodiverse or physically challenged, are at an elevated risk of suffering from isolation and stress-related illnesses. Gardening is a good answer, as it has been proven to be especially beneficial to physical, cognitive and emotional health. Nurturing Nature: A Guide to Gardening or Special Needs shows how the uninitiated can begin gardening: from the smallest pot of flowers to a large, flourishing plot of land. Author Jill Mays outlines why gardening is critical to everyone's health and provides step- by-step instructions on how to go about creating a garden. Specific activities, ways to adapt tasks to accommodate special needs, and benefits gained from the activities are reviewed. Finally, recent findings on the health benefits of gardening are reviewed. Nurturing Nature gives you all the information and resources you need to get started!
Jill Mays is the author of Your Child's Motor Development Story, which explains the critical importance of sensory exploration and natural play for healthy development. An occupational therapist specializing in sensory integration for many years, she has conducted workshops in a variety of settings and provided consultation to parents, educators and health care providers. For the past ten years she has immersed herself in gardening, working with farmers and assisting in the development of children's garden programs. She developed and currently leads a garden group for special needs adults. Mays lives with her husband, Eric, dog and a flock of chickens at the far end of Cape Cod.

Artist Reception: Leonora “Lee” Sullivan
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Join us in celebrating artist Leonora, "Lee" Sullivan with an artist reception on May 9th from 4-6pm. The reception is free, open to all and we will be serving beverages and light bites!
Artist Statement:
"Over the years, I have always been drawn to the Cape Cod landscape. Having a vacation home and now my permanent residence have given me ample opportunity to hunt for and explore the many faces of the landscape. The dunes and marshes are a strong draw for me, especially in the late day light with all its cast shadows and strong lights and darks. For me the late day light on the Cape is magical. It’s as if the spaces between the layers of the landscape seem to expand and often glow. Over the years I have found inspiration from Falmouth to Provincetown. A show at Preservation Hall in the heart of the lower Cape seems most appropriate for my oil paintings. Mostly self-taught, I studied with Jessie Pollock and Jeanne Duval in New Hampshire, and with Joe McGurl, Bill Davis and Ed Chesnovitch on Cape Cod."

Author Talk: Lisa C. Taylor
Wellfleet Public Library
How can our own mortality intorm creative work? In this talk, reading, and workshop, author Lisa C. Taylor will read and discuss The Shape of What Remains, her novel that is the story of one woman's journey after loss. Mortality for a writer is always present-looking in the window or darting across the road in front of us. Does the awareness of death make our writing more alive? Are there ways to write about death without just focusing on loss and grief? Stories and novels that mention death are, in a sense, stories of life at its most visceral, acutely aware state.
They can also be stories of celebration. Bring something to write with for one short writing activity. Lisa will read some excerpts from her debut novel and answer any questions. This is an interactive event.
Lisa C. Taylor is the author of three collections of poetry, two collections of short fiction, and her 2025 novel lhe Shape of What Remains. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing, an MA in Counseling, and is the co-director of the Mesa Verde Writers Conference and Literary Festival. Orginally from the Northeast (with strong ties to Cape Cod), Lisa now lives in Southwest Colorado.

Miah Nate Johnson - Photography
Curated by Robert Rindler
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
In a few seconds, an unspoken script of untold interaction arises. Characters walk onto the stage, a second passes and the scene has changed, the play has ended. I photograph the street very much like a stage, filling the frame with energy, emotions, unveilings, and risk.
In the few seconds of time and light I leave just enough room for the audience to get in there and form an opinion. Whether in color or black and white this momentary awareness subtly brings the viewer into relationships with seemingly dissimilar elements. In these images, relationships emerge slowly and sometimes bestow themselves with a finality.
My work is a response to a moment when the world falls into place and reveals boundaries between public and private, the individual and society. In appearing accidental, this visionary reaction-from a brief glance to a rigid glare exposes the American experience of alienation in culture. That captured second opens discussions about concepts that invoke our fears and anxieties: economic and political affairs, consumer culture, racism and loneliness.
Wellfleet, Cape Cod, my home, is a place of remoteness, contrast, desperation and isolation. The Cape photographs expose the viewer into an isolated lonely or masked personal world of small town and marginal living. The personal photographs I produce of the Cape are meant to be honest. They sometimes can be perceived as brutal. I do not twist what I see into something nice. I photograph what I see. I record the moments of lives for exactly what they are.
These photographs lend the subjects an unusual, sometimes almost unbearable, presence. The portraits are voyeuristic, even obscure. They broach the boundaries of private and public as they make moments that don't warrant reflection or examination until caught in a photograph. My photos inspire a conversation: They observe and ask questions of society and ask viewers to do the same. No answers are expected; it is the question. that drives the experience.

He was awarded Massachusetts Cultural Grants for several years and has been a member of Blackstar Agency in NYC, throughout his time taking photographs.

Teddy Thompson - Payomet Road Show at WHAT
Payomet Road Show at WHAT
Over a 6-album body of work, Teddy Thompson has carved out his own music path, drawing inspiration from his familial British folk roots, and American folk, soul, country, pop, and rock– and he's performing in the intimate listening room at Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater on Saturday, May 3 for a Payomet Road Show.
Teddy Thompson is an English folk and rock musician. He is the son of folk rock musicians Richard and Linda Thompson and brother of singer Kamila Thompson.
“Country music has been inescapable for me, a recurring theme,” says Teddy Thompson. “At the age of 10 or 11, that’s the first thing I heard where my ears pricked up and I’m like, ‘Oh, this is music? I like this.’”
The simplicity and emotional intensity of classic country – à la Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and George Jones – has been a big part of Thompson’s own sound as an artist, which the New York Times called “beautifully finessed” and NPR hailed as “the musical equivalent of an arrow to the heart.”
Back in 2007, he explored his roots with Up Front and Down Low, an album of Nashville golden era favorites. And now he’s picked up the thread again. Thompson says, “The pandemic hit and all bets were off, and the question came up, ‘What can we do musically just for fun? I said, ‘Let’s do some country songs.’” Where the earlier record was made with what he calls “an off-the-cuff approach,” his latest release, My Love Of Country goes much deeper.

A Writing Garden w/Indira Ganesan
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Join A Writing Garden for a one-day writing workshop. We will gather in a small, gentle, safe group to work on original fiction, memoir, and/or poetry. Start something new in class, or bring work-in-progress. Using prompts, we will write in class and share our work. We will also spend time looking at published work to gain further understanding of craft. We will look at what is working in the work, and see where there might be need for improvement, so you leave with new ideas and a plan to keep writing.
Fee: $80
