Payomet's Season Launch Party featuring the Fred Clayton Band
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Come out for our 2026 Season Launch Party ft. The Fred Clayton Band
In addition to enjoying an evening of blues with the Fred Clayton Band, Payomet's gathering a small group of folks whom we refer to as Payomet Music Mavens, including our friends at WOMR who support music in our community, for an open, informal chat about music programming on the Outer Cape—what’s working, what you’re excited about, what might be missing, and in what ways we can better serve our audiences.
Both the conversation and concert are open to the public. The goal is simply to create a relaxed, welcoming space to connect and share ideas before heading into the evening’s performance.

SUNDAY JANUARY 4 ~ 2:00 PM-4:00 PM
Opening Reception: Janis Ekman "My Wellfleet"
Great Pond Gallery at Wellfleet Adult Community Center
Janis Ekman - “My Wellfleet”
Curated by Robert Rindler
On Exhibit: January 4 - 30
Reception for the Artist: January 4, 3:00 - 5:00 PM
“Unable to paint what I saw, the camera taught me to see what I could not see.”
Janis began taking photographs at the age of eight. Her first camera was a Kodak Brownie Instamatic. Her first subjects were her sister hanging upside down on a fence and the family dog Dixie. When the roll was spent her father drove her to the photo shop in town. A week later she received a fat envelope with 2x2 black and white photos. She was sold, It was magic. She still keeps the envelope with the name “Ekman” on it and a life long devotion and love of the camera began.
Her dad gave her a Pentax 35 mm when she left for college. Later she would develop black and white photos in her bathroom. And then came color. She would spend many vacations on the Cape and she noticed something. The photos were better there. There was something about the light, the colors. She spent many hours exploring the galleries and the artists there and how they used color. She walked the beaches with her two Border Collies. One evening she had a small point and shoot in her pocket. As she turned to leave after the sun had set, she noticed something. The light on the water was absolutely stunning. She took dozens of photos as the waves broke quietly on the shore. This was it. This would be one of the subjects of her photos for years to come. She chased the sunset over and over. When that didn’t work she looked to the clouds, then patterns in the sand. She didn’t need to take them to the photo shop in town. She could “develop” them on the computer at home. She learned to work with the new digital world.
In 2006 she opened the GARAGE GALLERY in a converted garage space on her property in Wellfleet. Since then she has been exhibiting and selling her work to guests who come year after year to see what is new.

For Whom the Bell Tolls: Text and Context
$60.00
January Tuesdays 6th-27th 2-4pm (ZOOM)
Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls is an epic romance set in the Spanish Civil War over a few days in 1937. Hemingway wrote the novel soon after witnessing the war first hand. An immediate bestseller when published in 1940, the book centers around an American volunteer's attempt to blow up a strategic bridge on behalf of anti-fascist Republican forces. The novel has stirred controversies with political factions on both the right and the left and with literary critics. This class will read the novel and explore the historical, political, and literary contexts which make it controversial--and timely--in today's political climate. We will read the Scribner’s paperback edition.

THE SECOND IMPEACHMENT TRIAL OF DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
by James Carroll and Rachel DeWoskin

Wellfleet: A World Epicenter for Marine Mammal Strandings with David Aronow and Gary Kreamer
Wellfleet Public Library
The shape of Cape Cod and Wellfleet Harbor, along with sandbars and tidal extremes over shallow mud flats, makes Wellfleet a global hotspot for marine mammal strandings. The creatures find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time, and they get stuck!
This year the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum created an exhibit exploring Wellfleet's relationship to our marine mammal neighbors. Initially focused on slaughtering these creatures for oil, food, corset stays, toys, etc., the relationship has evolved to one of respect, admiring, caring and rescue. This history is told on five large banners of photos, stories, linked readings, and even a song! Join exhibit creators David Aronow and Gary Kreamer for a presentation welcoming the exhibit to the library for a pop-up display.

Utica - The Last Refuge
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
This documentary film screening is a benefit for Latinx in Action presented by Night Owl and Art for the Border. Tickets $5.
A derelict American city finds grace & success hosting a flood of refugees - from Burma, Sudan, Bosnia, Ukraine, Gaza, Vietnam, Cambodia, Somalia, Laos and Nepal.
"This is a town that loves refugees, that was made and remade by refugees.""Everything in this film, the slices of everyday life, the intimacy - details a people and a community who found each other... and together gained salvation."
Utica, New York was once a hub of the U.S. textile industry but had become a city of abandoned factories and condemned housing, where for many the best hope was represented by a lottery ticket. Then, the refugees began to arrive. From Bosnia, Burma, Sudan, people with only the clothes on their backs, people who’d never seen snow. The influx of outsiders was frightening to many, but Utica opened its arms and discovered that those who have “only the clothes on their backs” also have skills and talents, a resilience honed through years of struggle, an enviable work ethic, and values many of us can learn from. • Utica : The Last Refuge follows a family through their first year in Utica, which has returned to life, attracted new business, and become “a showcase for how a town turns itself around economically,” a showcase for values of family and community that can seem lost in this grievous era, a model for a kind of economic development that promises much more than wealth.
LATINX IN ACTION is an immigrant-led nonprofit that helps Cape Cod immigrants with language skills, food aid, resource and legal referrals, and support groups. As government immigration policy has turned to persecution, LIA has begun developing advocacy and legal resources as well. People who donate $50 or more to the Latinx in Action GoFundMe may choose a gift at the event of original art contributed by local artists.

Tennessee Williams: Film, Theater and Provincetown
$60.00
Thursday Afternoons January 22nd & 29th, February 5th & 12th 2-4pm (IN PERSON)
During several summers in the 1940’s, Tennessee Williams wrote all or parts of some of his most well known works on the Cape. From THE GLASS MENAGERIE, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, and others in between, Provincetown was the artistic muse and the birthplace of some of the American theater’s most astoundingly significant works of art, by one of its most prolific and important playwrights. In this course, we will examine Williams’ connection to Provincetown, plays he worked on in town, film adaptations of these plays, and explore others of his works influenced by his time on the Outer Cape. Through play scenes, film clips, texts by Williams scholars, we will immerse ourselves in 1940’s Provincetown and how it shaped WIlliams’ work, life and career. You may even be cast in a scene or two as we read from the plays! (acting experience not required). Taught by newcomer to Open University Tennessee Williams expert Alston Brown.
Seeing the Music
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Seeing the Music is a collaborative presentation hosted by Gabriella Simpkins, a local singer-songwriter and composer, and Susan Overstreet, a local artist and educator. Over the course of one hour, Susan will be creating a new work in reaction to Gabriella's music, engaging in a dynamic creative exchange and showcasing the magic that emerges from interdisciplinary collaboration. The final painting will be available for purchase via a silent auction that will conclude at the end of the performance. These artists look forward to collaborating not just with each other, but with the audience as well in this presentation of the creative process in real time.
Gabriella Simpkins is an award-winning singer-songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Cape Cod, MA. Informed by her vast experiences across genres and performance settings, her music exists at the intersections of folk, classical, jazz, and indie rock. Her work explores the nuances of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, as well as how those interactions can shape the world around us. She values music as a tool for community connection, conversation, and activation. She performs her singer-songwriter material regularly in the Boston area, leads workshops and classes, teaches private lessons, and hopes to establish herself further as a freelance composer in the coming years.
Susan Overstreet’s creative process of weaving vibrant colors with a technique of palette knife and brushwork captures a visual tapestry between abstract imagery and representation. Overstreet’s bold expressive style is driven by unique natural elements found in nature that offer an evolving kaleidoscope of color. She paints en plein air and in the studio, inspired by both landscape and the human figure.
Susan completed studio work at George Washington University, and continued studying fine arts at the Corcoran School of Art and the Art League School of Alexandria. Her work was accepted in many juried competitions in Virginia and now New England. Susan has taught at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Milford Arts Council, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod (where she served as artist in residence and learning coordinator), the Creative Arts Center of Chatham, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and the Plymouth Center for the Arts. She has led sketching tours to Scotland, France and New Mexico. She is represented by Tracy Lindholm Nee, 780 Main Street in Dennis, MA. SusanOverstreet.com
MET Opera at WHAT: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay - special presentation
Composed by Mason Bates
Libretto by Gene Scheer
Based on the Book by Michael Chabon
Due to popular demand, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, recorded live earlier this season, will be presented in select cinemas. In this exhilarating new adaptation of Michael Chabon’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, two Jewish cousins invent an anti-fascist superhero and launch their own comic-book series, hoping to recruit America into the fight against Nazism. Incorporating scintillating electronic elements and a variety of musical styles, composer Mason Bates’s eclectic score moves seamlessly among the three worlds of Gene Scheer’s libretto: Nazi-occupied Prague, the bustling streets of New York City, and the technicolor realm of comic-book fantasy. Bartlett Sher’s production provides spectacular visuals to match, with towering sets and proscenium-filling projections designed by 59 Studio. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met premiere-production, with baritone Andrzej Filończyk as the artist Joe Kavalier, who flees Czechoslovakia and arrives at the Brooklyn doorstep of writer Sam Clay, sung by tenor Miles Mykkanen.

MET Opera at WHAT: Arabella (Rescheduled Date)
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Arabella
On November 22, Strauss’s elegant romance brings the glamour and enchantment of 19th-century Vienna to cinemas worldwide in a sumptuous production by legendary director Otto Schenk that “is as beautiful as one could hope” (The New York Times). Soprano Rachel Willis-Sørensen stars as the title heroine, a young noblewoman in search of love on her own terms. Radiant soprano Louise Alder is her sister, Zdenka, and bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny is the dashing count who sweeps Arabella off her feet. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Join Bitter and Broken Men’s Chorus and Wildflower Lane for a rocking good time. Proceeds from the concert will benefit WOMR. "Love in a time of madness."
Bitter and Broken Men's Chorus are a band from a small town on Cape Cod. They play original rock and roll that pulls from 70’s punk and new wave, New York jazz, outlaw country, and outsider music. Their songs celebrate family and community, loss and resilience. They are unapologetic about their lefty, blue collar politics. Its music for when you hold your head in your hands. The soundtrack to the coming collapse, but fun! Join Tom Fettig (guitar/vocals), Andrew Fettig (bass), Benny Albro (drums/piano), Frank Poranski (guitar), Kami Lyle (trumpet) and special guest.
Their self-entitled album can be found on Bandcamp, Spotify, and Apple Music.

Social Housing: Obstacles and Opportunities
Open University of Wellfleet at Preservation Hall
Social Housing: Obstacles and Opportunities
$60.00
February Thursdays plus March 5th 10am-12pm (ZOOM)
The objective of this course is to examine social housing: its history in the US, and the political factors and mechanisms for funding that influence its creation and growth. Examples will include post-WW2 housing, selected east coast and west coast projects, and lessons from abroad. We will include the Lawrence Road housing in Wellfleet and the process of determining reuse of the Maurice Campgrounds site; guests involved with the local process will join us. With a focus on the architecture, course initiated and taught by an architect, discussions will examine civic-minded concerns. One question for discussion is how the architecture can contribute to acceptance, approval, and success of a project. The course will also look at the difference, if any, between “social housing” and “affordable housing,” and attempt to dispel the misnomer of “low-cost housing.”
This course will be instructed by Martha Rothman .

MET Opera at WHAT: Eugene Onegin
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Eugene Onegin
Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin, which will be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera stage to cinemas worldwide on May 2. Baritone Igor Golovatenko is the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph). This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.
MET Opera at WHAT: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

The swim takes place in one of Wellfleet's many kettle ponds. Water is always calm and one of the first to warm up in the season. The bike course consists of two 5-mile loops through one of the most beautiful areas you will ride all year. The run is an out-and-back course that turns right near the famed Beachcomber Restaurant, where athletes will catch ocean views before turning at the halfway point (when we say it's all downhill from here, we mean it!).

Holiday Movie Matinee
The Muppet Christmas Carol
There is nothing that brings people together more during the holidays than the Muppets! The classic Dickens holiday tale is retold with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine in the role of a lifetime). Other Muppets - Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie Bear, and Sam the Eagle - weave in and out of the story, while Scrooge receives visits from spirits of three Christmases - past, present and future. They show him the error of his self- serving ways, but the miserable old man seems to be past any hope of redemption and happiness.

A Christmas Carol
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Actor Neil McGarry will be touring his award-winning, solo performance of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for the twelfth year, touring across the U.S. in December 2025. Directed by Ross MacDonald, McGarry’s performance was named “Best Of Boston” by critic Jules Becker and won "Best Solo Performance” from the Independent Reviewers of New England in 2014.
Armed only with a bare stage, a few props, and Dickens’ glorious words, McGarry delivers the perennial holiday classic in a tour de force that has left audiences riveted from Boston to Prague. Joyous, captivating, and witty, A Christmas Carol is a fully staged, full-throated leap into Dickens’ most famous story, delivered with a simplicity that disarms and touches the heart.
