Introduction to Screenwriting
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING with Claude Kerven
January 15th - February 12th, 2025
This 5-week course is perfect for newbie screenwriters! I’ll teach you all the essential tools and lingo you need to write a kickass short film. Together, we’ll turn your awesome idea into a first draft screenplay. Don’t sweat it, we’ll start with the basics of visual storytelling. We’ll dive into breaking down story structure, theme, character, and conflict. Plus, our in-class discussions are a no-pressure zone where you will get supportive feedback. We’ll encourage you to convey your story through visuals instead of just relying on dialogue. And don’t worry about finding time for this course - classes only meet once a week on laid-back Wednesdays from 10am-1pm (with a 20-minute break, of course).
No experience necessary.
Cost: $100
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
This class is taught in lots of different ways, like lectures, group chats, writing tasks, and project talks. Everyone should be cool with sharing their work and chatting about their classmates work in class.
Landscape Architecture: Site and Narrative
Open University of Wellfleet
Martha Leibowitz Rothman
Wednesdays, 2-4 PM
Jan. 22, 29, February 5, 12, 19
Zoom
Building upon the OUW winter 2024 course, Landscape Architecture: The Public Realm, Infrastructure and Climate Change, this year’s course, Landscape Architecture: Site and Narrative, will focus on landscape architects/ architects and projects based on “story” or narrative. We will explore work that is embedded in the history of a place and how that history inspires the design. (Please note that the earlier course is not a pre-requisite for this course.)
In Class 1, we will begin with Sara Zewde, landscape architect and assistant professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design. Her work and forthcoming book, Olmsted’s Legacy, Slavery and Landscape Architecture, provide a view of Olmsted through a current lens, building upon last year’s discussion of Frederick Law Olmsted whose 19th century landscape architecture practice was rooted in his social ideas. Zewde Studio’s site design for the Dia Art Foundation in Beacon, NY, exemplifies her thinking about water/flood plains, history/legacy and climate change.
In Class 2 we will focus on mid 20th – 21st century landscape architects for whom story-telling figures prominently in their work: Lawrence Halprin, west-coast practitioner who created active social spaces for movement; Charles Jencks, architectural theorist and writer who spent many summers in Wellfleet; and Anne Whiston Spirn, early proponent of community-based design. Each of these designers was unique in an era dominated by modernism and formalism.
In Class 3 we will look at two memorials: the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park at Roosevelt Island, originally designed by Louis Kahn in 1974 and realized in 2010-12 by Mitchell-Giurgola Architects; and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, by MASS Design Group.
In Class 4 we will look at the Washington DC Tidal Basin, originally conceived in the 1800s and reconceptualized in 2023 as the Tidal Basin Ideas Lab. The Ideas Lab was included in last year’s course; this year we will discuss climate change linked to the theme of narrative.
In class 5, we will conclude by looking at work by notable landscape architects whose work exemplifies regenerative landscape design, Bas Smets of Brussels, Belgium, and currently teaching at Harvard GSD; and Julie Bargmann, Professor Emerita at the University of Virginia and founding principal of D.I.R.T.
Each class will begin with a slide presentation, followed by discussion. There will be some optional reading, but assignments will be mainly video/YouTube lectures by the landscape architects and architects. Maximum enrollment of 20.

Reception for the Artist at Great Pond Gallery: Vicky Tomayko

Monthly exhibit of Outer Cape Contemporary Artists

Reception for the artist: Sunday, February 2, 3:00 - 5:00 PM

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
”We live in an animate universe with an ever evolving vital source. Our natural habitat is made up of community: living organisms (plants, animals microbes) that interact with weather, soil water, and sunlight to support the existence of the whole. Daily, as I hike around the Cape with my canine companion Odo, I experience atmosphere and sound, observe flora and fauna, and am fascinated by the multitude of patterns that occur in nature. The memory of these wanderings are my inspiration. I would like my work to communicate something about diversity and the spirit that permeates our world.
This exhibition includes work created using printmaking techniques. Most of these compositions are monoprints, or one-of-a-kind works on paper. Some are editioned prints. If the imagery makes you think about the planet as a fragile place that shelters life, if it lets you experience a little joy, it is enough for me.”
ARTIST’S BIO
Vicky Tomayko is an artist and printmaker who lives and works in Truro. She makes paintings and prints and collaborates with other artists whenever possible. Tomayko teaches at Cape Cod Community College, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown where she manages the print studio. She is a member of the Bad Whales, a sound based performance group.
Tomayko was an Artist-In-Residence at the Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School for ten years. She was assistant professor of printmaking at Connecticut College, 1979 through 1981, and was awarded a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in 1985-86. Tomayko received an MFA from Western Michigan University where she concentrated on stone lithography. She has been the recipient of two Ford Foundation Grants. Tomayko was a national member of the oldest women’s art collective in the United States, A.I.R., Brooklyn NY, for 7 years. She is represented by the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown and has been included in exhibitions in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Basel, Venice, Istanbul, Melbourne, and most recently, Shanghai.

MET Opera At WHAT - Fidelio
Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at WHAT
Fidelio
Following a string of awe-inspiring Met performances, soprano Lise Davidsen stars as Leonore, who risks everything to save her husband from the clutches of tyranny. Tenor David Butt Philip is the political prisoner Florestan, sharing the stage with bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny as the villainous Don Pizarro, veteran bass René Pape as the jailer Rocco, and soprano Ying Fang and tenor Magnus Dietrich, in his company debut, as the young Marzelline and Jaquino. Bass Stephen Milling sings the principled Don Fernando, and Susanna Mälkki conducts the Met’s striking production, which finds modern-day parallels in Beethoven’s stirring paean to freedom. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

MET Opera At WHAT - Salome
Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at WHAT
Salome
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

Betty and Rita and Mitzi and Marilyn: Jack Cole’s Dance Muses
Open University of Wellfleet
Marc Strauss

Jan. 13, 20, 27, Feb. 3, 10

Broadway and Hollywood musical lovers are more than familiar with Jerome Robbins, Bob Fosse, Michael Kidd, and Rob Marshall, among others, but few know the name of dancer and choreographer Jack Cole (1911 – 1974). Often referred to as the Father of Theatrical Jazz Dance, Cole predated and in fact influenced those choreographers as well as the succeeding generations of stage and screen choreographers. A unique mélange of jazz, ballet, tap, theater dance, Indian, and Afro-Caribbean styles make up the choreography of Jack Cole, a true polymath who is still underappreciated and under-represented in the dance history books. This class will focus on the qualities of that creativity as performed by four major dance muses for Cole—Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Mitzi Gaynor, and Marilyn Monroe (and others)—through DVD and YouTube showings of routines throughout Cole’s twenty-odd film output from the 1940s through the 1960s. With Marc Strauss as your curator and guide, come experience the dances of the little known but highly influential Jack Cole and the famous women who performed his work.

Claude Kerven
Thursdays, 12-2 PM
January 16, 23, 30, February 6, 13
Preservation Hall, Wellfleet, in person
NOTE: This is a free-standing course, one in a series of four being offered by Claude Kerven at the Open U. of Wellfleet on the history of film. These courses have been designed to be taken independently. If you love film, then this course is for you.
Movies play a key role in spreading awareness among women, uncoveringtheir potential, challenging the male-dominated world and stimulating further social change. Historically, the film industry has portrayed women as wives, lovers and mothers, or as glorified objects of beauty, sex appeal and entertainment. But due to the feminist movement, gender stereotypes are finally being challenged and more complex female characters represented on screen. Female directors offer the audience an image of women that may be seen to align with their actual status in society. Additionally, films directed by women are more often written by women and have more leading female characters than do films directed by males.
This course will address the greater recognition women directors are beginning to receive and honor twenty remarkable women who blazed the trail. It includes an analysis of the work of Emerald Fennell, Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Nancy Meyers, and Agnes Varda.

Wellfleet Public Library
MONDAY JANUARY 13 - "NOW WHAT"
This class will be about the various accessories commonly used, additional techniques used in more complex projects, introduction to available knitting/crochet items available at the Library, what can be done to build upon the basics learned, and of course answer any questions your new found skills have brought to you!
KIMBERLY DURHAM has been an academic teacher and has been crocheting since adolescence. She learned knitting from two elderly friends when her children were small. Both crafts are immensely satisfying and enjoyable, not a day goes by without some of either craft.
TOM STALL started knitting 35 years ago, as a means to center and ground himself. He grew up around knitting as his mother was a prolific knitter (he still owns the sweater she made for him that got him through the Blizzard of '78), though he is a bit rebellious, as he learned to knit Continental versus his mother's English style of knitting.

Curated by Robert Rindler
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
The collages in this exhibit span five decades of linear time, but, as I view them together now, I see not a linear progression but a shared language of colors that declare themselves as structure. I build a collage with random papers- Color-Aid. hand=painted, mono-printed, black pastel paper, occasionally old wallpaper, old sandpaper, pieces of writing. Edges are cut or torn. I pick up a piece, then another piece, like play, move pieces around, take away, put back, until something starts to take shape, which means that the various pieces start talking together and making a kind of visual conversation.
Making collages for me is essentially play. I love the look and feel of paper, the beauty of a torn edge and the way scissors can meander like a stream finding its course. I paint large sheets of paper, then tear them into pieces, adding them to my pile of raw material. I never throw anything away. I pick out papers that my hand is drawn to and move them around on a flat surface. My eyes are open, my mind is shut. I have no conscious purpose other than to see what happens. I am alert to surprise, the happy accident, the recognition that something suddenly works.
Then, of course, there are the long hours of intense deliberation when I attempt to solve formal aesthetic problems. As Ben Shahn said, “Behind intuition is a whole lot of tuition.”
I like the juxtaposition of color, the sense of play between stability and motion, between coming together and flying apart. I like layering, concealing, revealing, and the sense of space and architecture. The calligraphic elements in my work are actual words and phrases which I have cut so they cannot be read. And in the black and white works I like the sense that somewhere the black areas could fit together, and the white, and the expressionistically painted areas, and that the words might reveal their meaning, but not yet, not yet. I like the tension that a desire for connection produces.
ARTIST’S BIO
Rosalind Pace is an award-winning artist and poet who has embraced both creative activities her whole life.
Pace came to Truro in 1973 to study at Castle Hill with Budd Hopkins, abstract expressionist technique, and then collage. This has been her only formal training, but it was transformational.
She returned each summer, began showing her work, teaching collage, teaching Image-Making,
and developing her aesthetic signature: solid color, free painterly areas, cut and torn edges, calligraphic elements often, spaces that open into other spaces, a play of rectangles.
Pace was born in Minneapolis; her early childhood was spent in Washington DC during World War II, where she remembers watching searchlights sweeping across the sky. She graduated from Brown University with a degree in American Literature, and received an MA from University of Michigan. She taught English in Afghanistan for two years, then had a long career as a poet-in-the schools, raised two sons, and moved to Truro in 1991. She was a member of the Group Gallery in Provincetown, worked at and then was director of the now-legendary Long-Point Gallery. Poiesis: Five Decades of Collage, a retrospective of Pace’s work, was curated by Grace Hopkins for the Provincetown Art Association and Museum in May-June, 2024.
Pace’s work is represented by the Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown.

Hiking Across Spain With Tom Leidenfrost
The Camino de Santiago is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle James in Galicia, Spain. In spring of 2024, Cape Cod musician Tom Leidenfrost spent a month walking over 700 kilometers across northern Spain. He brought with him only what he could carry (including his trusty accordion) and took photos and videos along the entire trip. Join Tom as he describes what it is like to hike across Spain, what he had to do to prepare for his journey, and what he has planned next!
