Monthly Exhibit at Great Pond Gallery: Sian Robertson
Wellfleet Adult Community Center
Monthly exhibit of Outer Cape Contemporary Artists
April - Sian Robertson
Curated by Robert Rindler
Artist Reception: April 6, 3-5 pm
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I have always been drawn to maps, and one of my favorite things about using them to create art is that they retain the inherent history of the person who owned them before me - a history I am rarely privy to yet I feel becomes part of the work I create. I often imagine maps and atlases rolling off the printing press - household names like Hammond, AAA, Rand McNally, (or OrdInance Survey from the UK, where I grew up). And somehow one of the tens of thousands of copies of that particular edition, maybe decades (once or twice even a century) after it was printed, finds its way to me. The paper is worn at the folds, yellowed at the edges, cities are circled, routes are highlighted. Coffee spills, phone numbers, and directional notes all speak to its earlier life as a functional object in someone else’s hands. Through these maps I experience histories small and large as I vicariously travel other people's vacations, and witness the downfall of empires as borders move and country names change.
I like to say that a beautiful map makes my heart race and my hand reach for my X-acto knife. And through the cutting and tearing, the layering and pasting, the rolling and folding of that one atlas or single fold out map, I too become part of its history.

Alice Di Micele at Pond Hill School
Pond Hill School
Alice Di Micele is an Americana/Folk artist, rooted in the natural world, using the earth as her primary source of inspiration, threading its essence into her music. Alice’s connection to nature has created a deep bond with her listeners over the decades, gifting people a safe space to express their emotions and heal in the process. Throughout her career, she has released a staggering 17 albums, including her latest works ‘Every Seed We Plant’ and ‘Interpretations: Vol 1’, building a dedicated fanbase along the way.
Alice Di Micele weaves a rich tapestry of sounds, from the early days of her folk-inspired songs, through to the sensual influences of jazz and soul, and the energetic pulse of funk and rock. Her kaleidoscopic soundscape is grounded by her warm, magnetic vocals. From rich deep tones to impressive high notes, and gorgeous Joni Mitchell-esque vibrato inflexions, Alice’s vocals stretch over five octaves, giving her voice both power and intimacy.
Alice’s story began as a singer, first in her school choir and later as a teenager in a local rock band. But her life took a new direction after watching David Grisman Quintet perform at Carnegie Hall. Inspired by the show, she called her band’s guitarist that same night and asked him to teach her guitar, determined to become a writer herself. And so, her lifelong love affair with songwriting began.
1988 would see the release of Alice Di Micele’s debut album ‘Make A Change’, which was followed by many years of touring and performances at festivals and music venues from the Strawberry Music Festival to Fineline Music Cafe in Minneapolis. Her time on the road has been an extraordinary one, sharing the stage with the likes of legends such as Bonnie Raitt and Joan Baez to Arlo Guthrie, and even the man who sparked it all, David Grisman. Throughout this, she has remained a true independent musician, releasing and touring her music without the help of a record label or management, instead focusing on her audience and building a loyal following.

Presented in Partnership with ArtPeaceMakers and First Congregational Church of Wellfleet

How do we choose to forgive when circumstances seem unforgivable? Join us for a showing of Martin Doblmeier's The Power of Forgiveness. This 75-minute- long film weaves together interviews with author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel, Vietnamese monk and war-resister Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as examining case studies on reconciliation in Northern Ireland, in the aftermath of a school shooting, and in coming to terms with the impact of both 9/11 and gang violence. Following the film, there will be a discussion led by Rev. Jon Elsensohn from the First Congregational Church, as well as members of Wellfleet's Artpeacemakers, as we examine the role of forgiveness in our own lives and circumstances. All are welcome!

American Prosodies
Open University of Wellfleet
American Prosodies
$60.00
Mary Maxwell
April 12, 18, 25, May 2, 9
Fridays, 1-3
Wellfleet Library
Following up on last year's Open University "What is a Poem?" course, this class will revisit the discussion in relation to late 20th- and early 21st - century American poetry. Even while contemporary poets continue to draw on the received tradition (Bradstreet, Dickinson, Whitman, Longfellow,et al.), poetic fundamentals are being radically revisited and reconsidered. Concepts as basic as the idea of what it means to write "American" are being readdressed and expanded by Anglophone poets.
In addition, ways of composing and distributing poems have radically altered; poetic content as well as sheer volume have expanded in extraordinary ways. The work of recent and present generations has been much enriched by such new approaches. We'll read and discuss some of these poets' more accessible poems, along with some of their most challenging offerings.
Although the syllabus will be built on the topical framework of last year's course, the instructor will also be proposing an overlapping set of poetic practice "clusters" as an aid to understanding the very wide range of contemporary poetry in English. (Class size will be limited to 20 attendees; no prerequisite)
Class One: Memory and Literacy, continued with reference to ethnography and ethnicity (Jerome Rothenberg; Cecilia Vicuña; Eduardo C. Corral, among others)
Class Two: Prosody and Dance, continued , with reference to The New York School, institutional reaction and influence (John Ashbery; Edwin Denby; Susan Wheeler, among others)
Class Three: American English, American Poems, continued, with reference to Black Mountain, Objectivism and LANGUAGE poetry (Charles Olson; Charles Reznikoff; Claudia Rankine, among others
Class Four: Incantation, Prophecy, Madness, continued, with reference to Naropa University and The Poetry Project (Allen Ginsburg; Ezra Pound; Anne Waldman, among others)
Class Five: Song's Larger Purposes, continued, with reference to ecopoetics, BLM, feminism and gender identity (Gary Snyder; Ishion Hutchinson; Layli Long Soldier, among others)

10 American Artists in New England
$60.00
Lewis Shepard
April 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12
Mondays, 10:30-12 on Zoom
Art History often uses compare/contrast as an approach to understand and appreciate works. In this class we will apply this approach to ten of the artists of great talent who have worked in New England and whose art shows richness of subject and skills. Among them are John Singer Sargent, Frank Benson, Edward Hopper, Scot Prior, Frank Stella, Alex Katz, Helen Frankenthaler, Michael Mazur, Louise Nevelson and Maya Lin.
Each session will focus on artists who worked in the same time frame but chose variant styles and subjects. We will look at paintings, graphic arts, and sculpture. Most of the works selected are from New England museums and libraries.

Under Pressure: The Artist vs. the Regime
$60.00
Ken Shulman
April 14, 21, 28, May 5, 12
Mondays, 4-6PM, on Zoom
"Under Pressure" examines how individuals--both real and fictional--react to dictatorships, totalitarian regimes, and all other systems that restrict freedom of expression. The syllabus includes films, plays, and books, as well as newspaper and magazine articles. Much of the class time will be devoted to rigorous moral debate: what is the responsibility of the artist living in a repressive regime; what can we expect of individuals in the face of evil; is collaboration always contemptible. We will re-examine these questions—and our convictions—each week in the context of that day’s readings and viewings.
Week 1: Kryzstof Kieslowski and two forms of censorship: Working in totalitarian Poland and the "free market" of the West. Films: two excerpts from his "Decalogue" and "Blue" Available on Criterion
Week 2: The Sacrifice: Sophocles and Jean Annouilh: Antigone. The story of Oedipus' faithful daughter who defies an imperial edict, told from two wildly diverse viewpoints.
Week 3: Making Films in Iran:Abbas Kiarostami: Choosing to stay and work in fundamentalist Iran. Films: "A Taste of Cherry" "Close-Up"
Week 4: Shut Up and Dribble: African American athlete activism, from Tommy Smith to Arthur Ashe to Colin Kaepernick. Readings to be assigned.
Week 5: His (her) Master's Voice: Leni Reifenstahl and filming the Third Reich. Films (to watch in excerpts:) Triumph of the Will, Olympia. Book: Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Reifenstahl

Peter Allgeier
April 14, 21, 23,* 28, May 5 *(note double session in second week)

This course on international trade begins with an examination of the realities of trade and a review of the profile of U.S. trade. Moving forward, we examine the rules of international trade, the development of U.S. trade policy, and a review of Biden and Trump trade policies. Then we move forward to review trade with China and trade issues related to climate change. The final focus of our discussion is on the question: Is there a better way to address U.S. trade issues? Peter Allgeier’s experience, his having served as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative and U.S. Ambassador to the World Trade Organization, provides him with a solid footing to guide us in addressing this question, one that comes at an opportune time in modern trade history.

Claude Kerven
April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15
Thursdays, 1:30 - 3:30
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Movies play a key role in spreading awareness among women, uncovering their potential, challenging the male-dominated world and making further social change. Historically, the film industry has portrayed women as wives, lovers, and mothers, or as glorified objects of beauty, symbolizing sex appeal and entertainment. However due to the feminist movement, gender stereotypes are finally being challenged, and more complex female characters are represented on screen.
Female directors offer the audience an unbiased and realistic image of women that aligns with their actual status in society. Additionally, films directed by women are more often written by women and have more leading female characters than in films directed by male filmmakers.
This course will address the greater recognition women directors are beginning to receive and honor 20 remarkable women who blazed the trail.
The course will be taught in 20 classes spread out over 4 sessions. This spring we will be discussing the following 5 filmmakers and their films:
1. BARBARA STREISAND (“Yentl” 1984)
2. AVA DUVERNAY (“Origin” 2023)
3. JUSTINE TRIET (“Anatomy of a Fall” 2023)
4. LINA WERTMULLER (“Swept Away” 1975)
5. NORA EPHRON (“Julie and Julia” 2009)

Are Rodgers and Hammerstein Shows Still Relevant in the Twenty-First Century?
$60.00
Marc Strauss
April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15
Thursdays, 6-8PM, on Zoom
The duo of Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-librettist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960) created a series of innovative and influential American musicals between 1943 and 1960. Their musical theater writing partnership has been called the greatest of the 20th century, presenting popular Broadway productions throughout a period considered the "golden age" of musical theater. Five of their shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music were outstanding successes, as was the television broadcast of Cinderella (1957). But what is their lasting impact today, over six decades after their last Broadway musical was written? Is their work still relevant, or has the art form evolved far beyond their striking innovations and popularity during a time long gone by? In an effort to satisfactorily answer these questions, Marc Strauss, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Conservatory of Theatre and Dance, Southeast Missouri State University, will curate, lecture, and lead discussion on numerous songs and dances from the Rodgers and Hammerstein canon over the five-week, ten-hour period of this spring 2025 OUW course.

Hildaland
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
In concert on their Northeast Tour.
Orkney (Scotland) born fiddler Louise Bichan and Indiana (USA) mandolinist Ethan Setiawan present a collaboration and meeting of their musical worlds. A path steeped in the fiddle traditions of their respective sides of the Atlantic, the journey taken wends through Scottish, oldtime, and Swedish inspired music intertwined with contemporary compositions. Bichan’s fiddle is a melodic foil to Setiawan’s counterpoint and harmonic depth, and the two weave in and out seamlessly.

Reading and Writing Edith Wharton
Open University of Wellfleet
John Anderson and Lynn C. Miller
April 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22
Thursdays, 2-4PM on Zoom
This course examines texts by and about Edith Wharton, with a central focus on her bestselling 1905 novel The House of Mirth. Both instructors have written texts in which Wharton appears as a character, and these also will be assigned reading for the class. Lynn C. Miller’s novel, The Angel of Devastation, a work-in-progress, portrays Wharton writing The House of Mirth, placing the novel in a biographical context, juxtaposed with the story of a contemporary playwright adapting The House of Mirth for the stage. John Dennis Anderson’s play, A Cultivated Friendship, co-authored by Karen Vuranch, portrays Wharton at the end of her life and focuses on her close friendship with the much-younger writer Louis Bromfield.
The class will be assigned to read selected chapters from The Angel of Devastation before the first class meeting. The second and third classes will be devoted to The House of Mirth. The fourth class will cover short stories by Wharton that will include “Roman Fever” and “All Souls,’” and the last class will discuss A Cultivated Friendship.

MET Opera At WHAT - Salome
Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at WHAT
Salome
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

PAUL AND ÉMILE
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Paul Cézanne and Émile Zola were inseparable as schoolboys in Aix-en-Provence. Once up in Paris they shivered sharing a bed and eating broiled sparrows, impatient for the world to recognize their genius, one as painter, the other as writer. Then, inexplicably, came a bitter falling out and a mystifying two decades of silence. But what might happen when they are unexpectedly reunited, in Cézanne’s studio, at the height of their separate life journeys?

Wellfleet has been the proud home of immigrants since people from Finland, Cape Verde, and the Azores landed to pursue their rich farming and fishing heritage. The "Bridges" program, now in its second year, is a student-led program in which 6th to 12th grade students conducted interviews with Wellfleet immigrants who shared their journey to Wellfleet. Women in Science: Biodiversity in Salt Marsh Grasses with Katie Sperry
Wellfleet Public Library
This presentation will discuss three research projects of mine that address biodiversity in restored salt marshes. It will give an overview of salt marsh restoration in New England and discuss how current restoration activities are impacting often un-considered aspects of biodiversity like genetic diversity. The three projects will traverse three disparate disciplines; fundamental ecology, population genetics, and social science.
Katie Sperry (she/her) is an ecologist with an interest in restoring coastal ecosystems. She has a BA in Biology and a PhD in Marine and Environmental Science and has spent the last decade researching how to best conserve and restore the habitats people enjoy and rely upon. She has a special interest in species and places that are commonly overlooked, like grasses and swampy marshes.
