Field School: Introduction to Shorebirds
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
August 2 and 3
There is no better place to explore and study the topic of shorebird ecology than the beautiful coastal communities of Cape Cod at the height of shorebird migration. This course is designed to give the novice birder, or those inexperienced with coastal birds, the skills to identify the 'peeps,' plovers, and other shorebird species.
During the course, we will touch upon topics such as identification, biology, behavior, and migration. Our discussions will also cover the issues and threats these birds face in coastal environments. Field excursions to barrier beaches, salt marshes, tidal rivers, and other unique ecosystems of the Outer Cape will provide opportunities to become acquainted with the diverse array of shorebirds for which the region is famous. Gulls, terns and herons will also be conspicuous inhabitants of these areas and will not be ignored!
Field walks may average 4-5 miles in length and on varied terrain-from established trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes. While there is considerable walking, most is done at a leisurely pace as we look for birds. Please pack a brown bag lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Sunscreen is also a good idea! Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. Binoculars are highly recommended - you may consider bringing a spotting scope as well.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. A detailed schedule will be prepared and sent to registrants at approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.
This course is one of several Cape Cod Field Schools offered. To learn more, visit www.massaudubon.org/capecodfieldschools.

AMZehnder Gallery
Mia Cross “Patchwork”
On Exhibit: July 31 - August 12
Opening Reception: August 2nd 5-7 pm
25 Bank St., Wellfleet
Please join us for the opening reception of “Patchwork” a solo exhibition by Mia Cross on Saturday, August 2nd at 5-8 pm.
“Patchwork” is a selection of paintings created by Mia Cross over the past year and a half. Patchwork can be defined as “cloth made by sewing together lots of smaller pieces of cloth with different patterns and colors.” While this title speaks to Mia’s ongoing interest in textiles, quilts, and the act of sewing, it is also a nod to the diverse collection of paintings in this show. Many were conceived of and created in Santa Fe, New Mexico where Mia lived for much of the past two years, while others have been painted since being back on the East Coast. Some explore dreams and “what ifs?” while others examine faces and memories. The common threads include explorations of color, the human figure, place, and story-telling.
Her paintings are on view from July 31st through August 12th.
There will be an artist talk on the following Saturday, August 9th at 5 pm.

John O’Connor: WindUpTheCatAndPutTheClockOut
Farm Projects
On view August 1–11, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 2, 6–8pm
Artist Talk: Friday, August 8, 6pm at Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Farm Projects is pleased to present WindUpTheCatAndPutTheClockOut, a solo exhibition by 2023 Guggenheim Fellow, John J. O’Connor. Known for his elaborately patterned, research-driven drawings, O’Connor constructs visual systems that merge diagram, data, and text in ways that are both deeply cerebral and disarmingly playful.
The works in WindUpTheCatAndPutTheClockOut take the viewer on a labyrinthine odyssey—where psychological fallacies bump up against sunspots, and sleep-talking meets the physics of car crashes.
Working with hand-drawn systems that feel at once scientific and absurd, O’Connor gives form to what he calls “phase changes” —those elusive shifts from one state to another that can only be recognized in hindsight.
O’Connor’s drawings mine a wide array of materials—from conspiracy theories and cognitive science to moments in chess history—synthesizing rigorous research and contingent storytelling into a wholly unique visual language. With the tone of a curious skeptic and the hand of a master draftsman, he creates work that invites both analytical scrutiny and poetic drift.
An artist talk will take place Friday, August 8 at 6pm at Wellfleet Preservation Hall.
O’Connor will also be featured in Project Project, an annual event and platform for experimental and collaborative temporary outdoor public artworks. Spread across sites throughout Wellfleet, this year’s event will take place at dusk on August 09
About the Artist John J. O’Connor was born in Westfield, MA, and holds an MFA in Painting and an MS in Art History from Pratt Institute. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023 and has participated in residencies including MacDowell, Skowhegan, and Civitai AI. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Artforum, Bomb, The Brooklyn Rail, and Art in America, and is held in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the New Museum, and others. He teaches and co-chairs the Studio Arts program at Sarah Lawrence College and is a member of the experimental art and technology collective NonCoreProjector.

Cape Cod Modern House Tour Hatch House
Wellfleet Adult Community Center
Join us for a Cape Cod Modern House Tour showcasing the iconic Hatch House and if time allows we will visit the Weidlinger House too. The Hatch House was designed by Jack Hall in 1960 for Robert Hatch, an editor of The Nation and his wife Ruth, a painter. The family occupied the cottage until 2008 when ownership reverted to the National Park Service. CCMHT received a lease in 2012 and finished restoration in spring 2013. All the original furniture and artwork has been re-installed by the Hatch family. It’s hard to describe the setting of the Hatch House, with its panoramic view of the bay, perched on the edge of a kettle hole, with a vernal pool below, and its untrammeled west-facing hillside which takes in the sunset over the water.

Monthly exhibit of Outer Cape Contemporary Artists
On Exhibit in August - Daniel Ranalli
Opening Reception: August 3, 4-6 PM
Curated by Robert Rindler
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
This series came about after travelling to Asia and experiencing its deep traditions of temporal art. The pieces in this exhibition were made on Cape Cod and in County Mayo, Ireland over a number of years. They began when I decided to sweep clean a large sandy bowl in the dunes of Provincetown where we were staying in one of the dune shacks Once it was free of footprints, I picked up a nearby rake and began to create a Zen garden. It was a very tranquil process – first imagining the shapes within the contours of the dune, and then making what was essentially a large drawing. Both the raking and the photographing of the piece was a very contemplative process as I used a large format view camera on a tripod. And of course, they would soon be erased by nature.
Although largely situated within the medium of photography, my work is often characterized as conceptual and/or environmental. The work is frequently rooted in the balance between control and chance – such as the unforeseen results in the photogram, the found scrawls on a classroom chalkboard or the path of a snail in wet sand.
ARTIST’S BIO
Daniel Ranalli has been working as a visual artist for over 45 years. His work is in the permanent collections of over thirty museums here and abroad including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), Museum of Fine Arts Boston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Harvard Art Museums, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, List Art Gallery (MIT) and National Gallery of American Art (Smithsonian). He has been included in over 150 solo and group shows in the U.S. and abroad and has been the recipient of two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and multiple fellowships from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
Daniel originally came to the Outer Cape in 1981 as the newly hired Executive Director of the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. In 1993 he founded the Graduate Program in Arts Administration at Boston University where he taught until 2015. He also wrote extensively on artist issues for several publications in the 1980s and 1990s. Dan also sits in as an occasional vocalist with the band Sensible Shoes.
Daniel and his wife, the artist Tabitha Vevers, divide their time between Wellfleet and Tucson, Arizona.

Author Talk: Robert Edwards
Wellfleet Public Library
Resisting the Right: How to Survive the Gathering Storm is a handbook for surviving a tar-right takeover of the United States. Today, that prospect is a frightening reality. It threatens the irreversible destruction of America's democratic system. In a powerful and necessary intervention, Robert Edwards urges that we prepare now for this nightmarish scenario, the better to resist and transcend it. Edwards shows how a right-wing autocracy can be combatted using political action, civil disobedience, economics, cyberspace, traditional media, social media, the arts, and even our personal relationships. A former US Army intelligence officer who now works as a successful screenwriter, Edwards draws on his military training to assess "the threat," and his storyteller's imagination to play out likely scenarios. At a time when the future of American democracy teeters on a cliff edge, the urgency of Resisting the Right could not be more acute.
Robert Edwards was previously an infantry and intelligence officer in the US Army. A winner of the Nicholl Fellowship from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, he has written numerous screenplays for all the major studios, directed the feature films Land of the Blind starring Ralph Fiennes and Donald Sutherland, and When I Live My Life Over Again (aka One More Time) starring Christopher Walken, and produced the documentaries Sumo East and West and The Last Laugh with his wife Ferne Pearlstein. He writes The King's Necktie, a blog about politics.

Author Talk: Carrie Mullins
Wellfleet Public Library
The Book of Mothers
Sweet, supportive, dependable, selfless. Long before she had children of her own, journalist CarrieMullins knew how mothers should behave. But how? Where did these expectations come from-and, more importantly, are they serving the mothers whose lives they shape? Carries suspicion, later crystallized while raising two small children, was that our culture's idealization of motherhood was not only painfully limiting but harmful, leaving women to cope with impossible standards-standards rarely created by mothers themselves. To discover how we might talk about motherhood in a more realistic, nuanced, and inclusive way, Carrie turned to literature with memorable maternal figures for answers. Moving through the literary canon-from Pride and Prejudice and Little Women to The Great Gatsby, Beloved, Heartburn, and The Joy Luck Club- Carrie traces the origins of our modern mothering experience. By interrogating the influences of politics, economics, feminism, pop culture, and family life in each text, she identifies the factors that have shaped our prevailing views of motherhood, and puts these classics into conversation with the most urgent issues of the day. Who were these literary mothers, beyond their domestic responsibilities and familial demands? And what lessons do they have for us today-if we choose to listen?
Carrie Mullins is a journalist and essayist whose work has appeared in Parents, Food & Wine Magazine, Epicurious, Tin House, and Publishers Weekly, among other publications. She is a former National Editor at the James Beard Award-winning website Serious Eats and a longtime contributor to Electric Literature, where she covered the intersection of literature and culture. She lives in New York City with her husband and sons.

Artist Talk with John O'Connor - Presented by Farm Projects
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
John O’Connor (born 1972) is an American artist primarily known for his large-scale, labor-intensive, abstract works on paper. In these works, O'Connor transforms information through idiosyncratic processes, creating equally idiosyncratic abstract shapes, forms, and patterns.
His works draw on relationships between spoken and written language, psychological fallacies, self-experimentation, mathematics, emergence in science and anthropology, and climate
prediction and error.
John J. O'Connor was born in Westfield, MA and received an MFA in painting and an MS in Art
History and Criticism from Pratt Institute in 2000. John was awarded a 2023 Guggenheim
Fellowship in Fine Arts. He attended MacDowell, Skowhegan, the Vermont Studio Center, the
Celia & Wally Gilbert Artist-in-Residence Program, and was a resident artist at Civitai AI this
year. John was a recipient of 2 New York Foundation for the Arts Grants - one in painting and
another in drawing - the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe
Foundation Studio residency.

Artist Talk - Mia Cross “Patchworks” at AMZehnder Gallery
AMZehnder Gallery
Mia Cross “Patchwork”
Artist talk on Saturday, August 9th at 5 pm.
On Exhibit: July 31 - August 12

Author Talk: Tony Kahn
Wellfleet Public Library
Tony Kahn will be presenting excerpts from his graphic memoir in progress, Human Warm, about his pioneering work in podcasting in the early 2000s. Tony's podcast "Morning Stories" was NPR's first podcast, as well as the first to be featured on iTunes. Tony turned his listeners worldwide into storytellers and a worldwide community of voices exchanging very personal stories from the most disparate of experiences. Hear their voices break through the alienation and stratification of the world today.
Tony Kahn has written, produced, narrated and hosted more than fifty radio and television programs and series for PBS, NPR, Nickelodeon, A&E Cable, Monitor Radio, CBS Cable, and Boston television stations WGBH and WCVB. He was also the producer and narrator of the NPR docu-drama series "Blacklisted," which chronicled the Hollywood blacklisting of his screenwriter father, Gordon Kahn, during the McCarthy era.

Beneath the Layers: Lisa Cohen, Artist Talk
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
“Beneath the Layers” offers a deeply personal and evocative look at the journey and challenges faced by immigrant families through her family experience fleeing Europe in WWII. Lisa Cohen captures the emotional weight of displacement, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring power of family bonds through her artwork. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the universal themes of belonging, identity, and the search for a better life.
One particularly striking image, “Käthe’s Wedding”, uses a mixture of photography, fabric, and encaustic wax sewn together, creating a powerful 4ftx 5ft, mixed media creation. Her work exudes a feeling of Käthe’s happiest day, not knowing what her future would bring.
Lisa Cohen’s work has garnered significant attention for its emotional depth and technical skill. Her work has been exhibited widely in the New England region, recently at Provincetown Art Museum, and Cape Cod Art Museum in 2025. Lisa Cohen is a member of New England Wax.
“Beneath the Layers” promises to be a profoundly moving exhibition that resonates with audiences on many levels.

Introduction to Embroidery with Esther Begleiter
Wellfleet Public Library
Welcome to Brazilian Embroidery, also
known as Three-Dimensional Embroidery. The beautiful dimensional technique is done by using a twisted rayon Brazilian thread. Petals of flowers are made by wrapping thread around the needle, casting on to the needle, or making bars of thread and putting loops on the bars, thus allowing the petals to stand up and away from the surface of the fabric. For this project, we will employ the latter technique with a special iridescence thread. Participants will create a flower with raised petals.
Presented by the Friends of the Wellfleet Library.
Free to the public.
For ages 13+. Space is limited.
Stop by the circulation desk or call (508) 349-0310 to register. Participants are recommended to bring their own sewing supplies (needle, thread, scissors). Limited supplies available.

Author Talk: Alice T. Friedman
Wellfleet Public Library
In Queer Moderns, Alice T. Friedman tells the fascinating story of the queer avant-garde of the 1920s and '30s in New York, Paris, and Venice, as seen through the eyes of Max Ewing (1903-1934), a young musician, photographer, and man-about-town who, although virtually unknown today, moved in extraordinary circles. In his photographs and letters, we meet the rising stars of modern art, music, dance, and literature and enter a world of interracial friendship, "queer space," and experimentation that shone brightly before being swept away by the Depression. It is a remarkable story that reveals that the history of modernism is more queer and more Black than previously recognized.

Author Talk: Mo Ogrodnik
Wellfleet Public Library
GULF
Dounia, a young Saudi mother, finds herself alienated in a desolate, post- weather, air-conditioned modernist box and decides to rebel against all forms of domesticity. Flora, a Filipina domestic worker haunted by the flood that claimed her infant's life, navigates the perils of her boss's insurrection. Zeinah, a Syrian woman, seeks love within the confines of her arranged marriage to a jihadist and finds herself joining the female morality police. Justine, a white American curator, reckons with her own violence and ethical limitations when her life intersects with Eskedare, a spirited and defiant Ethiopian teenager whose dreams have dead-ended in the Gulf. Bold moves unlock vital consequences, each woman's journey confronting us with our own capacity for cruelty, rebellion, resilience-and hope. Written with unsettling intimacy and determined empathy, Gulf exposes the stark realities of what happens when a woman's agency is stripped away and asks how far we will go in order to survive.
Mo Ogrodnik is a filmmaker, writer, and professor in the film department at NYU. She was the associate dean of the arts for NYU in Abu Dhabi and the director of FIND, a creative lab exploring the transnational heritage of the UAE. Gulf is her debut novel.

Movimento Project: a Decade in Motion
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
A Contemporary Dance Performance-Exhibition celebrating dance, dreams & discoveries 2015 – 2025.
Movimento Project: A Decade in Motion Contemporary dance—lyric, ludic, and expansive—awakens parts of ourselves often hushed by the cadence of daily life. It invites us to feel, to reflect, and to move toward a deeper understanding of life, of ourselves and our surroundings. This year, Movimento Project marks a milestone—ten years of movement, emotion, and exploration. Born from a vision to unite local dance voices with global artistry, the Movimento Project has grown into a living archive of human resilience, transformation, and connection.
Over the past decade, dancers and dreamers from every walk of life have stepped into the circle—through residencies, public workshops, and performances that come to life through the heartbeat of shared stories. This year’s celebration honors their journey in a vibrant photo and video exhibition, and brings the past to the present with live performances of pieces from our 10-year repertory—moments that shaped us, and now, may move you. The event begins at the venue’s entrance and brings the audience through the spaces with a variety of dance moments.
Join us for an all-ages hour of contemporary dance that blurs the boundaries between audience and artist, past and present, movement and poetry, stage and life. Expect moments of self-recognition, elegance and humor, unexpected choreographic delights, and a powerful invitation to witness the beauty of becoming what we are when we move -- Movimento.

Author Talk: Raymond Clarke, PhD
Wellfleet Public Library
Dive into the enthralling journey of scientific exploration in this captivating memoir as renowned scientist Dr. Raymond Clarke shares an intimate and profound account of his groundbreaking research and the personal experiences that shaped his career. On a year-long sabbatical, Dr. Clarke discovers the tiny tropical fish that sets the course for more than thirty years of his research, through which he comes to understand that there is always more to learn if we keep looking and bring our whole, creative selves to the endeavor. Delve into his personal reflections, the ethical dilemmas he faced, and the inspirations behind his most significant breakthroughs. This memoir is not just a recount of experiments and data-it's a narrative woven with passion, perseverance, and the triumphs and tribulations of a life dedicated to science. Whether you're a budding scientist, a curious reader, or simply fascinated by the stories of those who push the boundaries of human knowledge, Fieldwork offers an inspiring and enlightening read.
Raymond Clarke, a professor emeritus at Sarah Lawrence College, is a naturalist, ecologist, and marine biologist. Aside from his lifelong research on coral reef fishes, he has studied spiders, toads and box turtles, the turtle work being done in Truro and Wellfleet. After retiring, he participated in Rosalind Pace's memoir group at the Truro Council on Aging. It was there that he transformed his terse technical writing to a more expansive, engaging style. While he spends half his time in New York, his heart is in Truro, where he gardens and participates in discussions of environmental issues affecting the town.

The Birds of the Herring River with Steve Broker
Wellfleet Public Library
The Herring River Estuary in Wellfleet and Truro is home to a rich biological diversity, including salt marsh and freshwater wetland plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The last two decades have seen extensive studies of the ecology of the Herring River, including its physical features, hydrology, and the aquatic plants, fishes, turtles, and birds that live and breed there. Two hundred and thirty species of birds have been documented in the Herring River Estuary, including representatives of most North American bird families. Among them are some secretive and elusive marsh birds. The ongoing Herring River Restoration Project is projected to restore nearly 1,000 acres of highly productive salt marsh to an ecosystem degraded by the 1909-10 construction of the Chequessett Neck Dike. This talk focuses on the breeding birds of the estuary and the population changes that will come with the restoration of tidal flow into the estuary.

Cape Cod Chamber Music - Phenomenon: Two Manasses, One Nakamatsu & More
Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival at First Congregational Church of Wellfleet
Kobi Malkin, violin Pawel Knapik, bass
Grace Park, violin Jon Manasse, clarinet
Danielle Farina, viola Alec Manasse, clarinet
Brook Speltz, cello Jon Nakamatsu, piano
Talented artists join Manasse and Nakamatsu – including Jon’s son Alec Manasse. Clarinetists Jon and Alec will join the string players to perform Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor – even though the modern clarinet had not been invented in Bach’s time! The other piece is a worldwide chamber music favorite, Schubert’s Quintet in A Major, known as the “Trout,” for Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, and Piano.
The New York Times praised award-winning Israeli violinist Kobi Malkin for his “aptly traversed palette of emotions, from languid introspection to fevered intensity with gorgeous tone and an edge-of-seat intensity.” Grace Park is an internationally acclaimed violinist who recently gave her debut recital at Carnegie Hall; the San Francisco Chronicle called her “fresh, different, and exhilarating.”
Brook Speltz is the award-winning cellist of the internationally renowned Escher String Quartet and an artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center who also performs on extensive tours with the cello rock band Break of Reality. Since completing his master’s degree at The Juilliard School, clarinetist Alec Manasse has enjoyed a lively and varied professional life. Alec plays regularly with many of New York City’s top ensembles, including the Metropolitan Opera, the American Ballet Theater Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. He also frequently played in the Orchestra of Sweeney Todd on Broadway.

Field School: Hatching Diamondback Terrapins
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
August 23 and 24
This course is designed to offer unique opportunities to learn more about the turtles of Cape Cod with an emphasis on the threatened diamondback terrapin. In early summer, female diamondback terrapins leave the salt marsh to lay eggs in adjacent uplands. Several months later tiny turtles emerge from their eggshells, tunnel to the surface, and head to the marsh.
For over 30 years we have been studying the populations of terrapins in Wellfleet Bay. Through nesting surveys, mark and recapture studies, radio telemetry, and habitat and prey analysis, we have built a solid foundation of data to begin understanding the life histories of these animals and the human impacts affecting them.
During this two-day field school you will gain first-hand knowledge of turtle biology; monitor nests for hatching activity; weigh, measure, and release hatchlings; and document nesting success at various Outer Cape locations.
Indoor presentations will complement our field studies. A lecture on the first evening will provide a good overview of diamondback terrapins and their natural history. On the second afternoon there will be a lecture focusing on research conducted to study hatchling movements using radio tags, and an update on nesting statistics in our region.

Author Talk: Elspeth Hay
Wellfleet Public Library
The day Elspeth Hay learned that we can eat acorns, stories shed believed her whole life began to unravel. Until then she'd always believed we must grow our staple foods in farmed fields—the same fields wreaking havoc on our land, air, and water. But all over the Northern Hemisphere, Hay learned, humans once grew our staple foods in forest gardens centered on perennial nut trees: oaks, chestnuts, and hazelnuts. In Feed Us with Trees, Hay brings us along as she gets to know dozens of nut growers, scientists, Indigenous knowledge-keepers, researchers, and food professionals, and discovers that in tending these staple trees, we once played a vital environmental role as one of Earth's keystone species. Feed Us with Trees is Hay's hopeful manifesto about a brighter, more abundant future-and a critical look at the long- held stories well need to rewrite to build it. It will appeal to environmentalists, regenerative farmers, permacuiture enthusiasts, agroforesters, locavores, and anyone hungry for a more holistic, nutrient-dense diet rooted in wild foods and ancient knowledge.

PAUL AND ÉMILE
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Paul Cézanne and Émile Zola were inseparable as schoolboys in Aix-en-Provence. Once up in Paris they shivered sharing a bed and eating broiled sparrows, impatient for the world to recognize their genius, one as painter, the other as writer. Then, inexplicably, came a bitter falling out and a mystifying two decades of silence. But what might happen when they are unexpectedly reunited, in Cézanne’s studio, at the height of their separate life journeys?

Field School: Coastal Ecology by Kayak
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
Sept 19, 20 & 21
From deep blue water to gently swaying marsh grass, the coast of Massachsetts is dynamic, diverse, and iconic. Learn about the diverse habitats and dynamic natural systems that occur where land meets sea, and their importance to wildlife and combating climate change.
This course takes a unique approach to studying the coast of Cape Cod as kayaks provide a great way to explore the more remote and private areas of the Outer Cape that are inaccessible by foot or larger boats. While we will spend the majority of the time paddling on the water, each day does include short stops to get out and explore beaches and uplands on foot.
Over the weekend, this course will explore a multitude of coastal ecosystems, habitats and natural processes. Field trips and topics will include (but are not limited to) the role of glaciers in chain of kettle ponds, salt marsh science in an iconic tidal river and beach and dune ecology of Great Island.
Important Reminders: Previous (recent) paddling experience and good swimming ability are required. This course does not provide paddling instruction for beginners. Participants must have basic paddling skills. Open water bodies in which you'll be experiencing both wind and tide is not where you want to learn how to steer a boat!
Participants may choose among available single kayaks. All equipment is provided; all participants must wear life jackets. We recommend that you bring sunscreen, windbreaker, hat, and drinking water. There are no facilities, such as restrooms or water fountains, at the meeting places.

Field School: Birding the Fall Migration
Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
Sept 26, 27 & 28
Birding on the Cape during fall migration offers incredible diversity. Resident species mingle with southbound migrants and early arriving winter birds. We will explore the Outer Cape's barrier beaches, salt marshes, tidal flats, and woodlands in search of shorebirds, raptors, seabirds, songbirds, and ducks. This field school also features a whale watch out of Provincetown to search for pelagic birds!
During the course, we will touch upon topics such as identification, breeding biology, foraging ecology, and migration-including a fantastic opportunity to experience bird banding through a demonstration by Certified Master Bander James Junda. There is nothing as exciting as seeing a bird up-close and in-hand, and to learn what researchers can learn about birds only through banding! That evening, an indoor presentation will complement our field experiences.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. Beneath the Layers: Lisa Cohen's Art Reception

LET'S MAKE... PAPER CRANES PRESENTED BY ARTPEACEMAKERS
Paper cranes hold deep symbolic meaning, primarily representing peace, hope, healing, and good luck. This significance is particularly strong in Japan, where the crane itself is a revered creature, and the practice of folding 1,000 cranes is believed to grant a wish. In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, join local grassroots group ArtPeaceMakers for a paper crane-making workshop.

Monthly Exhibit at Great Pond Gallery: Daniel Ranalli
Wellfleet Adult Community Center

Author Talk: Cynthia Blakeley
Wellfleet Public Library
Cynthia Blakeley In Conversation with Lisa Mecham: The Innermost House
Raised in a nineteenth-century saltbox house in Wellfleet, Cynthia Blakeley was both surrounded by generations of immediate and extended family and isolated by the mysteries locked inside her affectionate yet elusive mother and short-fused father. While she and her sisters and cousins roamed the Outer Cape drinking in the dunes, swimming in kettle ponds, and dancing in Provincetown- Blakeley also turned to the inner world of her journals as she contended with her own secrets and memories. Blakeley's captivating memoir The Innermost House moves fluidly through time, grappling with the question of who owns a memory or secret and how our narrative choices not only describe but also shape and change us. In this insightful and poignant account of tenacious year-rounders on Cape Cod, Blakeley contends that making sense of ourselves is a collaborative affair, one that begins with understanding those we came from.
Cynthia Blakeley is a freelance academic editor and an instructor at Emory University in Atlanta, where she teaches courses on memory and memoir, interdisciplinary research, and theories of dream interpretation. Her creative nonfiction has appeared in Cape Cod Voice, HerStry, and Dreamers Magazine. The Innermost House is her first book.
Lisa Mecham's work has appeared in The New York Times: Tiny Modern Love, Roxane Gay's bestselling anthology Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture, and Huffpost Personal. Her digital archive project, Finding Judy, is preserving and sharing the life of Judith Shahn- a prolific yet unsung artist of the mid-20th century with Outer Cape connections.

Author Talk: Susan Rieger
Wellfleet Public Library
Like Mother, Like Mother
Lila Peirera is a force to be reckoned with. Raised in 1970s Detroit by her abusive father and stern Bubbe after her mother Zelda's early death, Lila escaped the poverty of her childhood to reach stratospheric heights as editor-in-chief of The Washington Globe. There, she exposes political scandals and establishes a reputation as a no-nonsense, straight-talker. At home, she's just as tough, leaving the raising of her three daughters to her kind and loyal husband. Having always craved more of her mother's attention--and having long questioned the circumstances surrounding her grandmother Zelda's death--Lila's youngest daughter, Grace, writes an autobiographical novel. In her book, Grace speculates that Zelda never died, rather, she abandoned her children, forcing Lila to become the hard-edged, dispassionate woman Grace grew up with. Grace's book is her attempt to make sense of her mother, but she could never have imagined that Lila would die shortly after its publication. Lila leaves Grace a posthumous directive: find out the truth about what really happened to Zelda. Zigzagging between Washington, D.C., Detroit, and New York City, and probing the truths that all families attempt to hide between generations, Like Mother, Like Mother is a smart, lively, and deeply moving novel about the inescapability of genetic inheritance.
Susan Rieger is a graduate of Columbia Law School. She has worked as a residential college dean at Yale and as an associate provost at Columbia. She has taught law to undergraduates at both schools and written frequently about the law for newspapers and magazines. She is the author of 2017's The Heirs and 2014's The Divorce Papers. She lives in New York City with her husband, author and journalist David Deby.
