Bauhaus and Cape Modernism
University of Wellfleet/ Preservation Hall
Instructed by Martha Rothman via Zoom with a field trip on the last day, April 23rd, April 30th and May 7 via Zoom & May 14th 10am-12pm
The Bauhaus was a revolutionary and influential art, design and architecture school founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius in Weimar, Germany. The school relocated to Dessau from 1925 to 1932, and finally to Berlin until the forced closure in 1933. This course will examine the Bauhaus principles, people and politics and their dispersal in the 1930s to the United States—Chicago “New Bauhaus,” Black Mountain College and the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD) where Walter Gropius was appointed a professor of architecture in 1937. GSD faculty based in Cambridge, MA, and their friends and colleagues were subsequently attracted to the Outer Cape and left a legacy of summer houses designed and built in this unique landscape. The last two classes will focus on the local Wellfleet history, geography and design, built upon Bauhaus principles; examine the work of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust (CCMHT) in preserving the architectural legacy; and conclude with an in-person tour, guided by Peter McMahon, of the Breuer House, recently acquired and restored by the CCMHT.

Music of Arabian Spain performed by David Rogers
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Washington Post-praised guitarist David Rogers explores the musical landscape of 16th-century Spain through the lens of Valencian court musician Luis Milán.
This program blends Arab and European influences with an organic, improvisational spirit that is both historically rich and deeply moving. Also featured will be Sephardic and North African music that originates in the Andalusian traditions. The second part of the program will feature 20th and 21st century Spanish music which blends these traditions to make the Spanish and Flamenco music of today.
Termed, 'a prominent guitarist,' by the New York Times, David Rogers maintains an active solo and ensemble career as a classical guitarist and performer on early plucked strings. The Washington Post has praised his ‘astonishingly florid’ solo improvisational passage work. He has been called a 'modern master’ of the classical guitar' by 20th Century Guitar. Classics today.com has praised his ‘first rate instrumental artistry,’ and the Lute Society of America Quarterly has called his technique ‘formidable.’ He is an endorsing artist for Aquila Strings, (Italy) and his compositions has been featured in major guitar magazines such as Fingerstyle Guitar in the United States and Akustic Gitarre in Germany.
David has recorded for Dorian, Callisto and Focus Recordings. He has taught master classes throughout North America, including the San Francisco Conservatory, The University of Southern California and The Interlochen National Arts Camp.

MET Opera at WHAT: Eugene Onegin
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
Eugene Onegin
Following her acclaimed 2024 company debut in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, soprano Asmik Grigorian returns to the Met as Tatiana, the lovestruck young heroine in this ardent operatic adaptation of Pushkin, which will be transmitted live from the Metropolitan Opera stage to cinemas worldwide on May 2. Baritone Igor Golovatenko is the urbane Onegin, who realizes his affection for her all too late. The Met’s evocative production, directed by Tony Award–winner Deborah Warner, “offers a beautifully detailed reading of … Tchaikovsky’s lyrical romance” (The Telegraph). This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Surprises, learning, emotional revelation, and investigation are the core of my work. I usually start with fairly representational figures but as I work I change the figure. I may wipe out an arm or leg, add an extra hand or paint out the face. Challenging myself is an important aspect of the process. I like going to unknown places.
I use the figure to explore relationships and the scope of human emotion. The formal approach is important in the process for me: judging shape, color and line.,constantly asking myself, how can I make this work?
ARTIST’S BIO:
I have been vacationing in Truro, Ma at my grandmother’s house since I was born. My dream to live here came true when I met my future husband Bill Golden on Ballston Beach. I soon moved up here in 2005 from Philadelphia. and became active in the robust art community here on the Outer Cape, showing at the Provincetown Art Museum, the Commons, What Theater and several other galleries.
My art education was in Philadelphia. , The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, The Philadelphia College of Art and a bachelor’s degree from Tyler School of Art. Over the years I painted a variety, the figure, landscapes, flowers, abstract and created fabric constructions.
My husband built me a studio. I had never painted to sell. but my aunt back in Philadelphia asked if I would paint flowers to sell in her café. I thought "Wow I can make some money at this” Well none of those paintings sold! I was so angry saying “I will never paint to sell” and pinned up large sheets of paper and began what is my mature art now, painting the figure. I was able to use the accumulated skills of many years to express what you see in the work...
So this is my expression now.

Becoming Sarah
Can you call yourself a survivor if you don't know what you survived? Take Sarah Vogel. Auschwitz is her hometown, yet she has no memory of the place. Not the obscene conditions of her birth, the mother, or the changing cast of faceless women who kept her warm on winter nights. She's only three when liberated, and with no one to tell her who she is or what she might become, Sarah has no choice but to invent herself. On her journey from Europe, land of the defeated, to America, land of the self-invented, she learns that holes in a person's past are red flags and that little white lies go down easier than explanations. But eventually those lies will become the wall that hides her true self, the good and the bad, from those she loves. Becoming Sarah is the poignant, sometimes ruthless portrait of an American family-its matriarch, a tough old bird who should never have drawn breath but is bent on lasting forever-and the line of daughters and granddaughters who follow. Each generation standing on the shoulders of the last; each gaining more of the strength, will, and maybe even luck that will make them Survivors in their own right.
Diane Botnick was born and raised in the Midwest. She called New York City home for years, writing while working for various organizations in support of the arts. Becoming Sarah is her debut novel. She and her family currently live in Cold Spring, New York.

Origins of Underground Dance Music: Safe Spaces, Sound Systems & Social Change
University of Wellfleet/Preservation Hall
Instructed by Mwalim Peters via Zoom on Thursdays May 7, 14, 21, 28 2026, 3-5pm
This lecture series explores the hidden history and cultural foundations of Underground Dance Music as an intersection of Black, Latino, and LGBTQ safe-space traditions. Drawing from early 20th-century urban Black social dance scenes, juke joints, and Jamaican sound system culture, the course reveals a lineage often erased by mainstream narratives that begin with the Loft and Disco. Participants will examine the shared values of Underground Dance Music culture, its role in fostering community and identity, and the evolution into Disco, House Music, Techno, and EDM. The series also addresses the persistent American pattern of Black cultural innovations being appropriated and obscured, reclaiming a more accurate and inclusive history of the dance floor.

Author Talk: 'Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders' by Lorna Gibson
Mass Audubon
The new book, 'Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders' by Lorna Gibson, brings an engineer's eye to the natural world. Drawing on her career as an engineering professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her lifelong passion for birding, Gibson reveals how birds function through the lens of structure, materials, and design. She investigates feathers, bones, bills, eggs, and flight—zooming in to the microscopic scale and stepping back to examine their larger structural systems.
In this illustrated presentation, Lorna shares highlights from the book and answers fun and fascinating questions like: Why, and how, are duck feathers so water repellent? And how do phalaropes draw plankton-containing water droplets up their bills when they lack lips?
Discover how engineering principles illuminate the hidden mechanics of birds. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.

Emotionally, they are all about painting. I search out surface, shadow, light, and color and bring them together onto a canvas."

The American Civil War, 1861-1865
University of Wellfleet/Preservation Hall
Taught by Maurice Isserman in person on Wednesdays May 13th, 20th, 27th and June 3rd 2026 1-3pm
The American Civil War, 1861-1865, is the central event in the history of the United States of America, not least because its outcome guaranteed that there would be a United States of America in the 160 years that have followed. More Americans died in the Civil War than in all other wars fought by the nation combined. We will consider the war not just as a series of bloody battles, important as they were, but as a moment of political, social, and cultural transformation. The war led to the end of slavery and the establishment of birth-right citizenship, and remade the relationship between the states and the federal government. The Union was preserved through the sacrifices of hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens, as well as the inspired leadership of some of the greatest individuals in US history, including Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Ulysses S. Grant. Class sessions will combine short power-point presentations by the instructor with discussion of weekly assigned readings from James McPherson, Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era.

Creating the Intercultural Field features first-person autobiographical accounts from twelve internationally renowned figures within the field of intercultural studies and communication. Through richly personal narratives, the book traces how these pioneers synthesized insights from anthropology, psychology, sociology, communication, linguistics, and education to forge a new interdisciplinary field of inquiry, research, and practice. In this engaging presentation, Dr. Yalowitz will offer insights and reflections on the process and practice of creating this book. He will discuss his role as co-editor, wherein he worked intimately with twelve authors, a co-editor, and an international publishing company. Explore critical themes impacting the development of the book and key learnings from the authors as they worked collaboratively over nearly three years to produce this book.
Daniel Cantor Yalowitz, Ed.D. is an intercultural and developmental psychologist in private practice in Western Massachusetts. He has been blessed with opportunities to live, work, and travel in 94 countries to date, always looking to deepen his experience and understanding of our wild, wide, and complex world and to make meaning out of his adventures and relationships. Daniel serves as Senior Advisor for Training Active Bystanders, a national citizen/activist program. Creating the Intercultural Field: Legacies from the Pioneers is his third book.

Grace Hopkins - Artist Talk
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Highly prolific abstract photographer Grace Hopkins has been creating dynamic photography since 1991. She builds a highly energized visual image from a tiny piece of reality. Arts writer Susan Rand Brown described Hopkins as "a photographer with the eye and soul of a painter.” Hopkins says: "My works are straight photographs taken of actual things that exist in the world and are never manipulated, but they look and feel like abstract paintings. Emotionally, they are all about painting. I search out surface, shadow, light, and color and bring them together onto a canvas."

“Small Boats, Big Taste” Documentary Screening
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
Join us on Friday, May 29th at 7 pm for a screening of “Small Boats, Big Taste; How a Community Combatted COVID” -a remarkable documentary that reveals how the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance launched a rapid, dramatic effort to support both our independent small-boat fishing fleet and people facing food insecurity during a time of great fear and uncertainty.
From the decks of boats offshore to food banks and pantries, fishing captains to fish processors and chowder makers, this inspirational tale explores how a community responds to a deep crisis, a case study in how people can come together to support, help, and feed each other.
Co-produced and narrated by Wellfleet’s very own Seth Rolbein.
This event is free to attend. Please stay after the screening to sample the soups featured in the documentary!
MET Opera at WHAT: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater
El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker. This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.

BOB DYLAN, JOHNNY CASH, AND THE FORGING OF AMERICAN MUSIC WITH MATT YORK
Wellfleet Public Library
Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan's mutual admiration and collaborating in the 1960s melded two styles of music that were, for the most part, stand alone entities: folk and country. Nowadays, we describe music that combines country and folk as Americana music, but that genre didn't exist back then. Dylan's 1969 album Nashville Skyline and appearance on the premiere of The Johnny Cash Show on ABC introduced him to a much twangier audience. Similarly, Cash's covering of a few Dylan songs and performing at the Newport Folk Festival opened the ears of many fans of folk music. Boston-based musician Matt York's latest concert program will use both songs and stories to illustrate the importance of these two titans of music.
This program is supported in part by a grant from the Wellfleet Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

This is not just a tribute show. This is Blue Violin — a genre-defying, conservatory-trained virtuoso who has lit up stages from Carnegie Hall to Singapore, and now brings his world tour to Australia, Europe, Asia, and across the U.S.
Often described as “Trans-Siberian Orchestra meets Lindsey Stirling,” Blue Violin delivers fiery virtuosity and cinematic flair in every performance.
Blue Violin has been earning international accolades for genre-bending performances that blur the line between classical virtuosity and rock energy.

Vinyasa Yoga with Michelle
Wellfleet Preservation Hall
This is a series of four classes focusing on the 8 Fold Path of Yoga. Classes will include meditation, focus on linking movement with breath in a sequence of interconnected postures, and always ending with healing savanna (relaxation). This class will meet you wherever you're at from beginner to more advanced yogi. Come well hydrated. On an empty tummy, bring a sturdy yoga mat and blanket for relaxation.
Michelle Sutton comes to us with 25 years experience sharing her sacred flow to her beloved students. Now retired in Wellfleet she hopes to share her practice with you.
