Alec Wilkinson - Midnights: A Year with the Wellfleet Police
When he was twenty-three years old, five months out of college, with a degree in music, and without any idea of what to do with himself, Alec Wilkinson took a job as a policeman in Wellfleet. Expecting not much to happen, Wilkinson took part in high-speed chases, attempted bank robberies, preventing drunks from setting his hair on fire, among other chaos and thankless tasks. He also had conversations with his eight fellow officers, who Wilkinson came to respect and admire. Wilkinson's memoir Midnights: A Year with the Wellfleet Police, originally published in 1982 and launching his storied journalism career, received a reissue this past January.
