Wellfleet Herring Count Workshop

  • Wellfleet Public Library 55 West Main St Wellfleet, MA 02667 United States (map)

Wellfleet Public Library

Dr. Betsy Gladfelter will provide an overview of the historical land use on the river - blockages in the 1700s and 1800s for mills, followed by conversion to cranberry bogs in the late 1800s until the early 2000s - and how the stressors to the river and its wetlands through these uses are being mitigated through restoration activities. The goals of the project include: a natural, self-sustaining wetland and improved fisheries; floodplain connectivity; and opportunities for public access and education. Results thus far have exceeded expectations. The talk will be followed by information, training and sign up for Wellfleet's Annual Visual Herring Count, and may also include an opportunity to meet Christa Drew, the newly appointed Executive Director of Friends of Herring River.
