The Punk Singer, Dir. Sini Anderson

The Punk Singer is a fawning portrait of fearless feminist activist and artist Kathleen Hanna, leader of the 1990s underground feminist movement Riot Grrl and former singer for influential punk bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Director Sini Anderson unveils details of Hanna's biography through archival and new interview footage with the candid and outspoken rocker; Hanna's Beastie Boy husband, Adam Horovitz; and a large group of friends, supporters, and former bandmates. Once one of the most famously outspoken feminist icons, Hanna dropped out of the public eye in 2005, claiming she'd run out of things to sing about. The truth, revealed in The Punk Singer, offers a never-before-seen view into the life of this fearless leader, from her early start in spoken word performance poetry to her coining of the phrase "Smells Like Teen Spirit' for Kurt Cobain.
