The 2020 break in the dune and the overwash at Wellfleet's Duck Harbor Beach have brought big changes no one imagined: plagues of mosquitoes and flooding of roads. Once a real harbor where Bound Brook Island mariners set off to fish the sea, it silted and duned up, marsh and forest grew inland. What caused the 100- year-old dune to give way? To deal with the challenges all this water has created, so far we've sprayed mosquito larvicide and pesticides, mulched 120 acres of saltwater-killed forest, raised a road above flood level to give access to Bound Brook Island. What more may we have to do as the inevitable waters continue to flow in? Join Sharon Dunn for this important talk featuring illustrations, photographs, and maps related to this issue.
Sharon Dunn, author of An Island in Time: Exploring Bound Brook Island: Its Land & People, Its Past & Present, has spent summers in an antique house on Bound Brook Island since 1993. She has observed up close the changes she describes in this talk.
