Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay
June 14 & 15
During this active weekend we will take the road less traveled, cover new ground, and experience the Cape at a beautiful time of year. Our extended hikes will explore the backwoods, remote beaches, dramatic dunes, quiet kettle ponds, and sheltering woodlands of the Outer Cape and take us to "hidden" parts of the Cape Cod National Seashore and local conservation areas that the average visitor and local rarely explore.
The Outer Cape will be the focus of our hikes. We can expect to experience quiet pine woods, dramatic bluffs, hills and valleys, peeks of the Atlantic Ocean, subdued saltmarshes, and time on the Outer Beach.
Each walk will avarage 5 miles in length and on varied terrain - from established wooded trails to beach sand and up-and-down a few hills and dunes.
While the routes of our walks do not allow for shortcuts, and the goal is to walk at a steady pace, we will also stop to enjoy the birds, wildlife, and local history. We will also take water breaks and stop for lunch. A shorter sunset walk at the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is also schedules - a perfect way to the end the first day!
Please pack a brown bag lunch, drinking waster, and snacks for each day hike.
Please dress in layers and dress for the weather (we will walk in all weather conditions). Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for walking. You might consider bringing binoculars, and a notepad or journal- you never know when inspiration strikes! A backpack in which to carry your gear is also needed.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. A detailed schedule will be prepared and sent to registrants at approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.
