Did you know that today, women earn more than 40% of all doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics? It's a remarkable change from generations past-yet the story is far from simple. In this talk, we'll take a friendly and accessible look at how women's roles in science and technology have evolved over time. We'll explore the social changes, cultural shifts, and personal stories that have shaped these journeys-no technical background required. Whether you've always loved science or simply enjoy learning how society changes over time, you'll find something to spark your curiosity. Come join the conversation as we reflect on where we've been, where we are now, and what the future might hold.

Catherine A. Roberts grew up in Chatham and as a theater girl who loved reading and the beach, never would have guessed she would end up as a mathematician! She is a professor of mathematics and environmental studies at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. Her research is in modeling natural resources. Her biggest project involved a model to help the national park service manage white water rafting in the Grand Canyon so that vacationers could enjoy a wilderness experience while simultaneously protecting this natural resource. She has several firsts --first in her family to earn a doctorate, first woman in her department to earn the rank of Professor, first woman to serve as Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society. In 2021, she was named a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics 2021, in part for promoting women in mathematics at every career stage, both by mentoring individuals to become strong and confident mathematicians and by working for systemic change. Catherine loves the Cape, the WooSox, and spending time outdoors!
