A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Although artist Walter Dorrell began oil painting more than 50 years ago, he is best known perhaps for his plein-air watercolor work. Since first coming to the Outer Cape in 1977, he found that medium more perfectly captured his outdoor experience of the famous “Cape Light.” His summer work was supplemented for many years by still-life work done in Winter in his studio in Wellfleet. This Great Pond gallery exhibit brings his work almost full circle, showing his recent oil paintings—still based on landscape, but in a more abstract mode.
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am very pleased to have a show at this fine venue, just down the street from where we have lived since 1982, invited and curated by Robert Rindler, assisted by James Connors
At age 91, I still love going out in the morning to my favorite spots as often as I can. The sheer joy of painting while floating on our local ponds has been a total delight for so many decades.
These paintings are explorations, really, landscape reduced to its color elements, seeing if I can still convey the excitement I feel when painting them. It’s a way of looking into the future, I suppose, hoping things will turn out ok. And I do!
