JOINT ARTIST STATEMENT: Tell all the Truth but tell it slant.—Emily Dickinson.        What shall I love if not the enigma?—Giorgio de Chirico. Slant Rhymes is a photographic conversation between photographer Alex Webb and poet and photographer Rebecca Norris Webb. Selected from photographs taken during the Webbs’ nearly 40-year friendship and later marriage and creative partnership, these photographs are paired—one by Alex, one by Rebecca—to create a series of visual rhymes that talk to one another, often at a slant and in intriguing and revealing ways.  “Sometimes we find our photographic slant rhymes share a similar palette or tone or geometry,” writes Alex in his introduction to the accompanying book, Slant Rhymes. “Other times, our paired photographs strike a similar note—often a penchant for surreal or surprising or enigmatic moments—although often in two different keys.”

ARTISTS’ BIOS Together and apart, Magnum photographer Alex Webb and poet and photographer Rebecca Norris Webb have created more than 25 books, including six collaborative books, most notedly Violet Isle: A Duet of Photographs from Cuba, which was shown at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (May 2011-Jan. 2012). They have exhibited widely, including at the Whitney Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and PAAM. The creative couple were married in 1999 at the longtime Wellfleet home of Alex’s parents—sculptor and draftsman Nancy Webb and publisher and editor Bill Webb—a house and studio that Alex and Rebecca have now shared for the past 12 years. Alex’s most recent book is Dislocations, and his upcoming book on U.S. cities, Walking Blues, will be released by Aperture in the fall, with exhibitions in Chicago and New York. Rebecca’s recent hybrid poetry/photo book, A Difficulty Is a Light, is currently part of the exhibition, Photopoetry, at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, and her upcoming book, Glimmerings, a selection of thirty years of her lyrical color photographs, will be released in fall 2027 by Radius Books, with an exhibition in Milan.
