WIND MAPS: Kai Potter + Eli Pasternak. Gallery Opening
On Exhibit: January 6 - 16, 2024
Reception for artists: Saturday, January 6, 3-5 pm
Farm Projects is pleased to present Wind Maps, an exhibition of collaborative works by Kai Potter and Eli Pasternak. The drawings and videos on view were created in a dune shack as part of the artist-surfers recent residency with the Peaked Hill Trust Arts and Science Residency Program. The works represent a collaboration, not only between the two artists, but also with the Outer Cape wind patterns, which the artists harness and document in a quiet celebration of this quintessential coastal element’s agency as a willful and expressive force.
As gallery director Susie Nielsen describes: “This body of work is an extension of contemporary observational drawing traditions. It is about being present and open to how the natural world presents itself – noticing and taking cues from it, and, as an artist, using your skills to represent that world in accordance with the way it reveals itself.”
The artists said they had initially been accepted into the program with a proposal to create illustrated journals of their time in the Provinceland dunes. However, they changed course after fatefully adopting a stray mylar birthday balloon, still filled with helium, which was blown into their path among the dunes. This happenstance balloon became a tool for communing with the wind, inspiring further experiments with wind-catching apparatus, ultimately shaping the focus for their residency.
