The lives of horseshoe crabs and humans have been intertwined for centuries. These remarkable creatures have from horseshoe crab blood plays in ensuring that vaccines are safe to be used, as well as the recent progress in bringing a synthetic alternative to the medical industry. Sharon will also discuss how you can get involved and make a difference in celebrating, protecting, and preserving this amazing animal.
Sharon Kreamer is a horseshoe crab educator and advocate. She taught AP Biology, Biology, and Chemistry for 37 years in Rhode Island, Delaware, and Falmouth, MA. She founded and mentored Team Limulus, a student group that tagged horseshoe crabs and ran spawning surveys in Rhode Island. She is a contributing author to the award-winning Green Eggs and Sand curriculum on horseshoe crabs and has presented at regional and national teacher conferences, as well as international Horseshoe Crab Science and Conservation Workshops in Hong Kong and Japan. Sharon is the 1996 Rhode Island Presidential Awardee for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching, the 2009 Rhode Island recipient of the Siemens Award for Excellence in AP Teaching, a Delaware Nature Society Environmental Educator of the Year in 2015, and the 2016 Delaware Chemistry Teacher of the Year. She is a current member of the Horseshoe Crab Conservation Association of Cape Cod.
