African American Quilt Collection from artist Robin Joyce Miller will be up January 6th through the end of the month. The collection is presented by Art Peace Makers.
Miller will give an artist talk, “A Sankofa Journey: The African in America” from 4-5 pm at Prez Hall, which will be followed by the art reception.
ROBIN JOYCE MILLER history quilts are framed mixed media collages that have the composition of a quilt. There 16 quilts, 14 History Quilts in the collection. The History Quilts are part of her book, "The Faithful Journey - From Slavery to Presidency". The book is a collection of narrative quilts and poetry that carries the reader on a journey through African American history from slavery to presidency. Her quilts include: Journey to Hell Quilt, Slave Castle Quilt, Middle Passage Quilt, Plantation Quilt, Underground Railroad Legend Quilt, Great Migration Quilt, Harlem Renaissance Quilt, Jazz History Quilt, New Orleans Quilt, Civil Rights Movement Quilt, Gee’s Bend Quilt, Million Man March Quilt, Inauguration Day Quilt, Journey Quilt, Harriet Powers Quilt, and Negro Quilt.
Robin Joyce Miller is a retired award-winning NYC teacher, artist, author, poet, public speaker and activist. She taught special education for 15 years. After taking a yearlong study sabbatical, she returned as the art teacher for the next 14 years. During her years as a teacher of visual arts, Miller became a facilitator for NYC’s Blueprint for the Arts and earned the honors of both NYC and NY State Region 8 Art Educator of the Year Awards. She has conducted staff development art workshops for teachers across the city in many venues including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MOMA – the Museum of Modern Art. In 1992 Miller created a print ad for Pepsi honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. under the pseudonym, r.j. Scribbles. Since moving to Cape Cod, Miller became a resident artist at Zion Union Heritage Museum as well as a Bd of Director member at Cotuit Center of the Arts. Along with her husband, Jim, she created 10 BLM YouTube presentations that focus on African American history. Miller and her husband earned individual Commonwealth awards from State Representative, Steven Xiarhos for their community service. Miller exhibited her artwork and poetry at the Kennedy Museum in Hyannis from Feb 5 to the end of June this year.
