“Beneath the Layers” offers a deeply personal and evocative look at the journey and challenges faced by immigrant families through her family experience fleeing Europe in WWII. Lisa Cohen captures the emotional weight of displacement, the resilience of the human spirit, and the enduring power of family bonds through her artwork. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on the universal themes of belonging, identity, and the search for a better life.
One particularly striking image, “Käthe’s Wedding”, uses a mixture of photography, fabric, and encaustic wax sewn together, creating a powerful 4ftx 5ft, mixed media creation. Her work exudes a feeling of Käthe’s happiest day, not knowing what her future would bring.
Lisa Cohen’s work has garnered significant attention for its emotional depth and technical skill. Her work has been exhibited widely in the New England region, recently at Provincetown Art Museum, and Cape Cod Art Museum in 2025. Lisa Cohen is a member of New England Wax.
“Beneath the Layers” promises to be a profoundly moving exhibition that resonates with audiences on many levels.
