Public meeting begins at 6 p. Wed., March 19 in the Adult Community Center, 715 Old Kings Hwy., Wellfleet.
The meeting is hosted by the Maurice’s Campground Stakeholders’ Group, whose charge is ensure that the respective interests and views of all in town are well represented and considered by the Maurice's Planning Committee, which will soon be making recommendations to the town’s Select Board as to the amount and type of housing to include on the 21-acre property.
The overall presentation and discussion by the Stakeholders’ will emphasize the need to balance cost, time, and quality while ensuring the project aligns with Wellfleet’s affordable housing goals. Areas of focus:
Why affordable housing is needed and what has been done so far, prior to Maurice’s.
Information about how official decisions are made and what challenges exist.
Similar housing projects will be shown. What can be learned from their successes and mistakes.
People will discuss concerns about cost, size, and town rules for the project.
Information will be presented about how to pay for the housing and who can live there.
Why providing seasonal workforce housing will be especially financially challenging.
An argument will be made as to why the town should wait before making final decisions until there is a clear plan, especially concerning zoning and a realistic traffic plan.
Suggestions on ways to make the housing fair and affordable for different income levels.
The meeting will focus on finding the best balance between cost, time, and quality.
The goal is to plan carefully so the project is successful and benefits the whole community.
