ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My paintings, drawings and collage begin by observing a model or still life and responding or reacting to their essence. I ask myself: Is a life force or spark evident in the painting, drawing or collage I am creating? Does the composition of the piece, its simplest parts, work? And, how does color, shape and form push, pull and pulsate on a two dimensional surface? Paintings are made with walnut oil paint and pigment sticks, collages are built from my repurposed figure drawings and paintings, and I draw with charcoals of varying densities on paper.

Through my work as an arts writer, an assistant at Berta Walker Gallery, a teacher and lecturer, I honor and continue the legacy of Provincetown’s art colony. The influence of the teachers and artists who came before me is infused into my art as I come into my own and grow visually.
