A derelict American city finds grace & success hosting a flood of refugees - from Burma, Sudan, Bosnia, Ukraine, Gaza, Vietnam, Cambodia, Somalia, Laos and Nepal.
"This is a town that loves refugees, that was made and remade by refugees.""Everything in this film, the slices of everyday life, the intimacy - details a people and a community who found each other... and together gained salvation."
Utica, New York was once a hub of the U.S. textile industry but had become a city of abandoned factories and condemned housing, where for many the best hope was represented by a lottery ticket. Then, the refugees began to arrive. From Bosnia, Burma, Sudan, people with only the clothes on their backs, people who’d never seen snow. The influx of outsiders was frightening to many, but Utica opened its arms and discovered that those who have “only the clothes on their backs” also have skills and talents, a resilience honed through years of struggle, an enviable work ethic, and values many of us can learn from. • Utica : The Last Refuge follows a family through their first year in Utica, which has returned to life, attracted new business, and become “a showcase for how a town turns itself around economically,” a showcase for values of family and community that can seem lost in this grievous era, a model for a kind of economic development that promises much more than wealth.
LATINX IN ACTION is an immigrant-led nonprofit that helps Cape Cod immigrants with language skills, food aid, resource and legal referrals, and support groups.
