Film Screening: Daughter of Rubens

FILM SCREENING: DAUGUTER OF RUBENS

A short film documentary on the life and paintings of Nancy Ellen Craig (1927-2015)

The life and art of Truro-based artist Nancy Ellen Craig (1927-2015) is introduced in the short documentary film, Daughter of Rubens. Once regarded as the next John Singer Sargent, she began her mostly self-taught prolific career in New York, winning many prestigious awards including the Benjamin Altman Figure Prize of the National Academy of Design at the age of 26. A celebrated portraitist, she was commissioned by some of the most illustrious families of America and Europe including Frank Llyod Wright, Norman Mailer, The Guinness Family, The Duke of Argyll, Anjelica Huston, and Sean Connery to name a few. Daughter of Rubens sheds light on the bodies of work by this remarkable but unsung master artist. It is the film director's and producers' hope that audiences can comprehend the magnitude of her talent in the context of her story.

Followed by Q&A with film producer Christine Jones.

Film Screening: Journeys in the Light

Wellfleet Public Library

In honor of Juneteenth, join us for this special showing of the documentary Journeys in the Light:

Democracy, Diversity, and Myth in the Wake of the Mayflower, presented by the local chapter of the NAACP. The film's creators look beyond the iconic Euro-centric Mayflower story to present highlights in the history of the African American, Cape Verdean, and Wampanoag people in this region since the arrival of the English settlers in 1620. They find in the Mayflower Compact, and antecedents in Native American governance, powerful relevance for the divided America of today.

Journeys in the Light tells its tale through the eyes, historical research, and works of art of the vibrant community surrounding Zion Union Heritage Museum in Hyannis. The documentary, produced by Janet Murphy Robertson, features important local artists including Robin Joyce Miller, Carl Lopes, Pamela Chatterton Purdy, Joe Diggs, Michael Alfano, Sean Cassidy, Vasco Pires, and others.
