Join us on Thursday, October 26th at 7 pm for a concert with Acoustic Nomads!

At the crossroads between South American folk music and Northern Americana, you will find Acoustic Nomads.

Acoustic Nomads is a band of rising stars in the New England acoustic music scene, interweaving jazz and newgrass with folkloric traditions from North and South America. The group’s influences span Latin American, Appalachian, Jazz and Celtic music. Their innovative approach to composition expresses all the colors and flavors of the Pan-American experience, and their unique sound is a result of the players harnessing their varied musical interests and joyously exploring uncharted musical territory together.

Chief among their goals is to show audiences the diversity within and commonality between many different musical traditions, creating curious, compassionate and open-minded music fans the world over. Their performances maintain the truest spirit of folkloric music while delving into modern improvisation and sophisticated chamber music arrangements, truly showing how different cultures can come together and join in the celebration of art and humanity.

Acoustic Nomads have released three albums: Quartet (2023) and The Abominable String Band Vol. 1 & 2 (2021 & 2022 respectively). They are all available on Bandcamp and all major streaming platforms.

Open University of Wellfleet- Kander & Ebb: Life is a Cabaret (Zoom)

Open University of Wellfleet

Kander and Ebb: Life is a Cabaret! (on Zoom)

$60.00

Instructor: Marc Strauss

Time: Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: On Zoom

Dates: October 18, 25, November 1, 8, 15.

John Kander (b. 1927) and Fred Ebb (1928 – 2004) were a power duo of songwriters for over 50 years, penning tunes to Broadway shows and Hollywood and television films as diverse and provocative as Cabaret (1966/1972), Chicago (1975/2002), Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993), Liza with a Z! (1972), The Scottsboro Boys (2010), and many others. The two couldn’t have been more different: Kander remains, at 96, the midwestern sentimentalist composer, Ebb the sardonic and biting New Yorker. Somehow their differences gelled, and even if you don’t know them by name, their songs are etched in our hearts and minds: “Theme from New York, New York,” “Cabaret,” “Maybe This Time,” “All That Jazz,” and “A Quiet Thing” are just a few that you may recognize.

Marc Strauss will provide historical context and lead discussion on many of their biggest hits as well as fascinating unknown tunes, presenting CD and DVD songs and dances from their entire canon of works in chronological order. Come relive the majesty of Kander and Ebb or, if you’re new to their work, experience for the first time why life is a cabaret!

Matt Jenson's MIX UP MIX UP (reggae-jazz)

Wellfleet Preservation Hall

Pianist/keyboardist, singer, composer, arranger Matt Jenson lights up the connection between roots-reggae and soul-jazz with his Mix Up Mix Up band. The group presents original compositions and creative re-workings of pop, jazz and reggae anthems by Bob Marley, Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Marvin Gaye, George Gershwin, Chopin and more. For this show we are bringing special guest, steel pan extraordinaire and Cape Cod favorite, Michael Gabriel. The pure joy communicated between band members combined with their love of and deep experience with these styles results in a unique stylistic mash-up that immediately delights audiences of all ages. Imagine the creative interplay between musicians along with soul-jazz improvisation embedded in the intoxicating riddims of Jamaican reggae in an acoustic/electric jazz setting! It is sophisticated and soulful, with both instrumental and vocal repertoire, that gives nourishment to the mind, body and soul. Listen, dance to and feel the positive vibrations of Mix Up Mix Up!

Matt has a masters degree in jazz piano from the New England Conservatory of Music and is on the piano faculty at Berklee College of Music where he also teaches a popular class/ensemble focusing on the Music and Life of Bob Marley. He’s been to Jamaica many times and worked with many musicians there including some who were in Marley’s inner circle. Recently he helped to write, arrange, record and then tour the latest album by the internationally acclaimed reggae-jazz fusion band Groundation (the One Rock album, released May 2022).
